Quickie Snake Pit 99SS track sampler **NWS** some swearing

I have 5 or 6 complete pass movies to merge into multiple camera feed masterpieces, no music with lots of datalogs and timeslips, but that will take me a week of evenings to grind out. While looking over all the footage from the prior 2 weekends I had my new to me 99SS at the track, I couldn't resist making a quickie movie using some of the choice moments I usually don't let hit the light of day. Stuff like me cussing at the car, track, pit crew whatever makes me feel better in the heat of the battle and other assorted oops you will not see anywhere else, unless you have seen one of my blooper flics! You can see all the angles and camera positions I have selected for use in the SS, but it is a work in progress since the car is new too me, I still need to figure out what works and what sucks.

Because of me cussing like a trucker, these may Not be Work Safe, so be aware and turn the sound down or suffer the consequences. I made this tongue in cheek so feel free to laugh at me, because you will have to get in line behind me to do that. Even though it was a big stressful PIA plan to get to the track in 3 weeks, I'm glad I put myself thru it because my new little redfish, let me straighten my head out before heading into another long winter still working on my other money pit (Don't ask).

This is the Good, Bad and Ugly of me taking the 99SS to the track **NWS**

here is the smaller, lower resolution version for dial-up
http://04snake.com/movies/SnakePit200699SS-preview-med.wmv

Feedback is appreciated as always, but remember this is just a teaser. I am not changing my movies' format. The complete, Spilt Screen, P-n-P versions of individual passes with all the matching datalogs, slips and more pics is in the works. I might go to the track one more time this coming weekend and after that I want to tackle the movies in one push.

You can find these and another 800 or so movies on the 04snake.com/movies page

have have another 50 great flics I have collected over the last month or so that I need to upload
to the best free real dragstrip movies site anywhere, If I can brag a little here, check it out!

No complaints, I would rather be at the track racing and making movies then uploading movies at home, plenty of time this winter for that!

updates, FINALLY!

The interior and trunk is mostly back together, bottle is mounted at a 30* angle and I just got the NX Fire&Ice controller so that is the last of the pieces for the trunk and it is starting to look bad ass. I think I found a spot for the controller, not sure:

The fan looks like it is right off of a PC's CPU!

I got to see the entire SpeedHut custom made gauges lit up, I was so blown away I took some pictures with all the lights out in the garage. The green perfectly matches the SVT ones, although the illuminated needles are much brighter, but I think that will help me to know what is going on with center cluster, without having to focus on them or move my eyes directly to them. Yup I was so excited I left the frikin flash on when snapping pics in the dark and didn't figure out they would not show up like at night until I got home? what a putz! Well I'll have to try again for the money night time shots but here is the best of what I took today:

2007-0207_Cobra_centerCluster-800.jpg

These gauges not only look good but they are programmable, the button is to set upper and/or lower thesholds to trigger a VERY bright red warning light. Someone asked what that was for and I completely forgot it was so long ago when I ordered them, but they weren't cheap so they are full function.

My magic black box is wired in now to reprogram the Cruise Control. When you flip the "CC ARM" switch my cruise control becomes a momentary switch for my LINE LOCK! thats right, not only can auto's launch off of a footbrake, but so can I with my stick! I roll up to the beams, arm my CC, touch the brake about 1/2 way, not a full pump like for burnouts, put my left thumb on the CC button on the stock steeringwheel, now I am holding the car on the front brakes with my thumb! Now I have one foot for the clutch and one for the go pedal, I then will release the clutch enough to push the car forward to pre-stage. Then with the clutch all the way up with no play I will light the second light, stomp the gas to pull the rpms up to the 2 stage limit of 5500 and with the clutch heating up and the front suspension actually loaded I release my thumb and clutch on the 3rd yellow and hold the F on.

I went with a rather large purge button to help when I have gloves on. I will always do a quick purge right after the burnout because the way it is wired, the purge will only work if the NOS systems are armed, so I will still have a chance to reach down and flip the NOS arming system, if I blip the purge and nothing happens:

2007-0207_Cobra_purge-800.jpg

When attempting to attach the E-brake, they didn't have enough slack to be attached to the new lowers, so a couple L brackets were required to be fabbed up:

2007-0207_Cobra_Ebrake-800.jpg

2007-0207_Cobra_Ebrake2-800.jpg

Just a couple more things left to do like installing the underneath style anti-roll bar I just ordered from Miller Race Cars (yeah the same guys who lost on Pinks), a super sweet setup that will be welded to the Moser case and is specific for Stangs, the FRPP hood pins, the rear seat delete using matching carpet that just arrived, the bottle heater and controller has to be wired in and a blow down tube installed & vented outside of the trunk and finally a solution to the mufflers/tail pipes. The trick StainlessWorks mufflers barely fit in the body opening in front of the yoke but come too far back to allow room for a bend up over the axles, so I need to find a shorter high flow muffler or I will have to go with bullets.

2007-0207_Cobra_interior-800.jpg

I can almost smell the burnout box now!

wow i really did miss alot.

my set up this year is gonna progress as the year goes on. since my stock bottom end is kinda blown up, im doing a sportsman based 342. in the fall im doing the suspension, rear end, a 150-200 shot, and some very sticky tires. it should be fun:D

more pics.........

Kyle how about some nighttime gauges pics!

The ones I took with the rocker switches all lit for "CC ARM" "IC PUMP" "NOS HEAT" "NOS ARM" were still screwed up? I give up, you can get a good idea with these pics and eventually you will see them all along with my LM-1, air duct shift light and center purge in movies I make from the car this coming season..

The trunk is finished, I had to run down a couple of the fasteners I bagged up & then promptly lost, but I found everything and after a good vacuming, it will be ready for the track in April!

No store bought solution for the rear seat delete. A piece of cardboard became the jig, then a circular saw and a few hacks later the carpet from Lou at Laurel Mt. Mustang sent me perfectly matched the OEM carpets that were re-installed minus the sound insulation. I kinda like the looks of the rolled Aluminum firewall, no way I was covering that up!

2007-0210_Cobra_delete2-800.jpg

The hood pins were adjusted with welded nuts to the exact perfect height so considerable force has to be pressed close to the pins so they can slide out. You might think they are WAY too tight if you didn't realize how flexible the fiberglass hood is! I didn't attch the plastic covered retension wires, they are more for keeping you from loosing the pins, than a safety measure and the OEM latch assembly has removed to save weight.

2007-0210_Cobra_pins1-800.jpg

2007-0210_Cobra_pins2-800.jpg

I no longer thread the lead for the LM-1 up thru the shifter boot, it now has it's own grommeted hole into the passenger foot well area. A custom mount for the LM-1 is in the planning! Also pictured is the connection for the SCT old school Raptor datalogger. On the street I will have my custom Flame etched fire extinquisher, but unless it is permently attached as part of a fire retardant system, it is not NHRA legal, so I will pull it out for race days.

Project interior work finally winding down

Here are some of the last shots of the interior, just waiting on the anti-roll bar set-up from Miller Race Cars and then the mufflers and tail pipes can be fabbed followed by testing and tuning at the track. Not really coming to grips with the reality the 16 mos project is finally winding down.

I went with the non-woven Kirkey covers, they were a little cheaper but I just liked the way they looked better, don't care if they don't wear as good, I will just replace them if needed
2007-0224_Cobra24-800.jpg

Not much padding but I got the wide rides so they shouldn't be that bad, I'm not planning any long cross country rides anymore! Short rides shouldn't be at all, my back is at a good angle, my hips and legs can move freely without getting pinched down. They will be hot, no doubt but I was surprised how molded they seemed to be, they know how to make a functional seat
2007-0224_Cobra26-800.jpg

The anti-submarine belt of the Simpson Cam lock system, nice setup
2007-0224_Cobra29-800.jpg

The RidgidRaceCars billet Kirkey mount for mustangs only leaves a tiny hole in the Stock carpet, I'll fix it with a swatch and some hot glue
2007-0224_Cobra30-800.jpg

The billet mount fits right in to the interior IMHO
2007-0224_Cobra31-800.jpg

I think I have kept my interior stock appearing with all added functionality blended in a Pro Stock tradition. Clean but not blinged up.
2007-0224_Cobra28-800.jpg

The LM-1 presents somewhat of a problem, I can keep it on top of the console, using the power plug inside the console, where it was before but we are thinking about fabbing a mount to have it suspended in front and to the right of the right side air duct, angled toward me if I can reach the record button while belted in. It will be slicker than a cue ball if we do it, but not sure if I can reach it and the LM-1 is so big there is no other place that would work without obscuring something else. I never worried about seeing it before but with the NOS I may be able to spot a problem if it was higher and in my sight lines near the shift light. I always look at my AFR logs after rolling back to the pits but who knows I might be able to get out of it mid pass if I have a fuel problem and go blow-up lean, especially while I am developing the new NOS tunes.
2007-0224_Cobra32-800.jpg

This is the spot I think I will velcro mount the SCT Raptor data-logger, it was just loose on the floor before but I think I will clean up the wires and have one less thing flopping around. Not interested in hiding it in the glove box because I will have to be able to plug the laptop in and out of it after every pass so I want it really easy to access thru the passenger side door
2007-0224_Cobra34-800.jpg

I have the other 18" wide Drag Kirkey to install on the passenger side complete with 5-point Simpson Cam Lock belts and removable laptop mount system and the interior is complete except for some more cleaning.

Soooo close, getting so darn close! :nice:

How about this spot for the LM-1?

Somebody made the suggestion to go with a windshield mount for the LM-1, I guess Innovative actually sells one for $75 (ouch).
LM-1_mount.jpe

I already have the G-Tech on the windshield, low in the corner near the pillar behind the inspection sticker, but the LM-1 wouldn't fit in that spot, the G-Tech is small. It lets me record some telemetry and gives me another programmable shift light if I need to short shift into 2nd on a cold track. I just press it on before I stage and forget it except for the light if I need it and it does not impair the view of anything except the back of the stickers. I have a couple suction cup mounts for cameras, probably could convert one of those, but there are 2 problems the first one is I don't think I could reach it belted in but even if I could I need to see into the other lane (when I'm in the left lane) to gauge my closing speed to determine if I have to brake or not, so I really don't like anything on top of the dash but that was a good idea for sure!

I was wanting it as high as it could get without sticking up above the dashboard sight lines. My idea was to bring a thin plate out from mounting screws that are in the area of the yellow arrow and have the unit roughly positioned like illustrated but angled towards me and far enough over as to not block the raptor shift light in the air duct which I could move to the left hand duct but right now is in the right hand duct angled towards the driver for maximum visibility.

New-LM-1-location.JPG

But if it is too far for me to reach the record button while belted in then well I'll have to figure out something else.

Joe Lynch has his centered right in between the air ducts and if I had a heads up tach with attached shift light, that would be exactly what I would do too and may end up doing if I decide my stock tach is too low. I don't look at it much, just wait and focus on the shift light, maybe I should just attach the shift light to the LM-1 centered between the air ducts?

I'll figure it out, just kinda want to go slow as far as cutting and hacking on the dash.

99SS original movie from late fall

Had this to do for a long time, finally the movies of my new to me 99SS's first couple trips to the track. This one is from the very last day of the year the track was open, weather cancelled the weekend after this one. It was second pass of October 15th, 8th official track pass for the 99SS total including 3 from the day before, Sat the 14th and the prior Sundays 3 passes. No dyno tune, tuned it on the street and straight to the track so the 13.2, 13.0 and 13.0 from the very first day did surprise me .The next and last weekend brought lean spikes in different gears but worst in 4th. A 0.4 spike in AFR when already running on the edge with 13.0 commanded AFR meant 13.4 brought a couple degrees of knock retard out of my 29* advance timing and you could feel it nose over while it was happening. It ran 13.337 on this pass, even with issues in the tune. The prior pass was real rough traction wise on a cold track, so I couldn't get a good read out of it and the day before the AFR spike would only occur around shifting. After looking at the datalog of this pass I backed down the commanded to 12.6 while I could figure WTF was going on because everything else was looking good. The day before the lean spikes only occured bad in the last pass and I thought maybe an 1/8 of a tank might have been not enough gas. 13.4 was just too lean for my liking, so I richened it up so the spikes only went to 13.1 but I never figured it out that day, it was weeks later. I was trying to learn the HPT scanner logs and actually selected all the proper pids, but a someone more familar with HPTuners and GM's had to point to the codes that showed my Evac system gas tank purge cannister was releasing unmetered air right while I was blasting a gear for whatever cool day reason or whatever. There is no real way to just turn the Evac system off without a realtime tune, which kinda sucks.

2nd 13.3

Here is the 2nd of 3 movies from 10/15 13.3 @ 104

My 99SS is a 6-speed stock LS-1 with 4.10 gears and Nitto DRs

This is my last day a the track for 2006 and the cool air presented more
problems with my tune and lack of hook than it gave me an advantage with HP

My best of the day was 3 13.3's and this the the second one I got on the 4th pass

Last of 3 movies from 10/15 13.3 @ 105

My 99SS is a 6-speed stock LS-1 with 4.10 gears and Nitto DRs

This is my 3rd & last day a the track for 2006 and the cool air presented
more problems with my tune and lack of hook than it gave me an advantage
with HP. Still trying to figure out this new to me car and even though I had
mercy on the original clutch in this thing, still had a lot of fun making passes.

My best of the day was 3 13.3's and this is the last one I got on the 5th pass
