I'm looking for local reputable shop around the savannah,ga area to machine and assemble a 302 shortblock. I going to stay with stock components except for the cam so i dont really need a shop that only builds performance engines. I would like to stay under $1K. Is this reasonable? Any help would be appreciated.
if i were u, stick with stangnet and do it urself. you will feel great about it when its done and u will learn a few things as well. not to mention the $$$ u will save. It really isnt THAT hard, and most of the tools u need u can rent from a place like autozone or pep boys.
Yea ive thought about putting it all together myself. Im not a risky guy, so if i dont have a whole lot in machine work i would consider it. I have already had a blast tearing it down to pull the engine. I still need a shop to do machine work, though and i would need something closer than Atlanta.
In Savannah, I've used Auto Machine of Savannah on Old West Lathrop at Augusta Avenue. It's near the intersection of West Bay Street and West Lathrop - where you turn off of W Bay to get to the main gate of International Paper and close to where I-516 (Lynes Parkway) passes over W Bay. The entire property is bordered by Old W Lathrop on the west, Augusta Avenue on the south, West Lathrop on the east and West Bay Street on the north. You can Google Earth of Google Maps 12 OLD West Lathrop Avenue. Sorry about all of the directions, but it can be hard to find. Guy's name is Raymond, but I hear there is talk that he might be looking to retire. I've used Raymond since the 1970s for everything from work on built big-blocks (my younger days) to re-doing the heads on a Mitsubishi SOHC I was working on last summer. They are far from being the least expensive, but in my opinion, they are dead-on the best. It's the machine shop that places like Mall Motors (on Montgomery Crossroads) uses exclusively for their machine work. Phone is 912-233-1123. I have heard good things about Saul's Cylinder Heads, too, but I've never personally used them and I don't know if they do short blocks.
