I got the car back together yesterday (I had to re-index my bell housing and replace my bent clutch fork) because of my problem with missing 2nd gear. Well, I wanted a video of me shifting to see if I could notice anything I was doing wrong... I saw nothing. But anyway, Black95GTS, TMOSS, and WhiteStallionGT asked me for an in car video of me shifting in THIS THREAD because he was curious how I run my times without powershifting, well here it is...

Paul's in car video LINK UPDATED 11-8-04

I had my wife sit in the backseat and use our digital camera to record this. Unfortunately the video is a .mov type file and I can't edit it with my video editing software. So... I wasn't able to crop the main part out so there is some idle time in the beginning before I got a clear road to go on. Anyway... I hope you enjoy. This is how I shift at the track and every gear change made in the video was at ~6000rpms and I took 4th up to 6000rpms as well. The "drive" starts at the 18 second mark, and its hard to see how quick I move my feet but on the 3-4 shift you can see how quick I lift and the reapply the throttle... its quick so watch carefully! If the weather is nice tomorrow I'll try to get one where you can see my feet work better. I don't think there is much room for improvement... I just don't have the balls to keep that right foot planted.

Time to powershift it... Once your quick its no different then a fast shift, just leave your right foot to the floor!

Cool, thanks for the look. Your gears make those shifts come quicker than my 3:08s do. I doubt your gonna pick up a whole lot power shifting. Is the .10 or .20 worth the potential damage to the trans?

Damn, first gear is fast. I need some 4.10's. I don't know how you can ease into full throttle in first gear. I get zero traction in first, but that could be the stock goodyears :)

Wow you car climbs through the rpms fast. Having less gears and a stock motor sucks. :nonono:

    Nice driving! :usa:

Maybe your wife will get you an in car camera mount for christmas now. :D

315 drag radials help quite a bit. :D

My 225 Michelins don't do a damn thing.

Slick shifting too, Paul. This should be a lesson for all of the young guys who are starting to race but don't have any help or know where to start from.

This video shows how to shift a car very good. Most get their whole right side into pulling the shifter and that actually results in a slower shift. I used to do the same thing until my Dad saw how I shifted and he corrected me. Use your wrist, elbow and (very little) shoulder.

Paul, I've got a cement right shoe I could give ya. :D

Definately pretty slick... your rip through first and second pretty damn fast with the 4.10s. The footwork vid would be money as well.

Especially one of your launching, that is what I'm really interested in. I mean, if you just happen to have the time to make video clips for random kids on internet boards...

nice vid.... I too wondered about your shifting style. It must be nice to have all that weight in the back:nice: how much does the bar weigh? is your track hra or nhra? will it have to go?

i dont think i should post a vid of my in-car Yall will probably tell me to be call child services on me to take away my T5 :)

It won't let me see the vid. Can't download it.

However, I can imagine the following:

    Paul starts car,
Paul tells Molly to get in the back,
Molly tells Paul there is ***** for room back here,
Paul says we used to park in this thing,
Paul tells Molly to make sure the lense cap is off the camera,
Molly smacks Paul on back of head,
Paul launches car and breaks traction instantly throwing Molly side to side,
Molly says some few choice words,
Paul hits 2nd,3rd, and 4th violently sending Molly's head back,
Paul says, did you get it,
Molly says, I did, but after all that, you won't be !!!!!!

Thanks guys, I'm glad you liked it. I'm not the best driver as I've been with people that are quicker than I am (some may remember GMKILLR from here.. that dude could drive the balls off a 5 speed) but if it can help some of the guys like Joe said that'll make me happy. Thanks for the compliments. I really think the newbies need to see the foot work and I will try and get that today... the foot work is where the "quickness" comes from.

LOL... I was literally on the side of a highway, I pulled over, my wife got in the back, and as soon as I had an open road off we went. I didn't know she had already started video'n when I told her to get ready.

As for how it hooks in 1st... it's always held with a "roll on the throttle" or a slip of the clutch. It normally makes for a good street race unless I get overly confident like I did against that syclone earlier this summer. I was VERY surprised it hooked on that run because of how cool it is here now though... nittos + cold air equals spin city. If I just nail it straight to the floor the tires will go up in smoke, but not if I "ease" into it. Also like Snoozer said, the weight is helping me there (though I'd take lighter weight anyday over drag racing a tank) I think that is why the car hooks as well as it does at the track too. I will tell you this... it spun the tires MUCH more easily when I had the stock heads and cam and 3.73's in the car... that was just due to the low rpm torque from the stock setup. I have managed 1.91 60's on 100% street tires, 1.70 60' on 245-50-16, 1.66 on 315-35-17 nittos, and 1.65 60' on OLD 26-10.5-16 ET streets with my current combo. If I can get the car to settle instead of shocking it with a quick hit of power it will normally hook, if I side step the clutch the car will squat too much and unload the tires and I spin. I REALLY want to take another one today when I'm not rushed as I was in that video. My wife only had like 10 minutes to go with me and video the car. I know I can hit the 2-3 and 3-4 slightly quicker... just slightly though.

    LOL... that's funny. :rlaugh:

Charlie, that was funny as hell and not far from the truth!!! :rlaugh: :rlaugh: :rlaugh:

Well, that is primarily the reason why I never powershift it, BUT I do have a TKO and if that 1-2 tenth of a second makes a difference from a 12 second slip to a 11 second one... the thing WILL be powershifted! I do have it in my head that I can't do it though so I will have to overcome that.

I think the bar was around 60lbs if memory serves me right... its been in there since '98 so I don't remember exactly. I know that the chrome plated piping is NOT on the lite side. My track is IHRA, but I just saw where the NHRA is going to revise the rule book for '05 and they are lowering the roll bar requirements to match that of the IHRA. I do run at several different tracks and some are NHRA. I NEVER run on race day, I only do T&T's and track rental days so I get away with my bar even though its not technically NHRA/IHRA legal. If I went on a race day, I'd be kicked out for sure. I WILL NOT put a full roll bar in my street car though... and my wife said if I ever do she'll never ride in it again.
