Mail Order Tunes

I am interested in finding out about mail order tunes. What is the process and cost associated with ordering one. I'm guessing you have to provide certain info. (year, make & model of car, modifications). Who is considered reputable? I would have called a couple of shops today but it is already after hours. I'm hoping to get some info from peope who have already been through the process before I start shopping around.
