Modifying distributor for oil pump drive only

Has anyone modified their distributor to only drive the oil pump?

I plan on doing a EDIS conversion and won't be needing the distributor for anything other than running the oil pump.

Was thinking about just cutting the top of the dist off as per the pic below. Then maybe put a rubber cap over the top.

Ford Explorers didn't come with the 351W engine.

Gonzo: Thanks for the pic. Looks pretty much like what I'm thinking of doing. Hard to tell what's going on at the top there.. block off plate welded on?
 
i lopped off the top then cut the shaft so it sits 3/4 inch below the cut, then i ground a taper onto a shaft slightly bigger than the bushing and pounded it in, i believe i use the shaft from a long 1/2 bolt.
