Well probably 6-7 years ago my Grandma gave me her 65 and 66 Mustangs and a bunch of spare parts and they've just been sitting since I couldn't get the brakes unlocked on them. Well today me and one of the guys I went and took a torch to them to see if we could get them unlocked.

Still couldn't get the brakes unlocked on it. I've beat on them so much it's starting to break chips off the drum, and it still won't unlock. At this point I'm half tempted to just cut the drum off since it's going to need another one anyways. And the inlet to the water pump was broke off and there was a bunch of white chalky stuff in it and the radiator hose.

And we pulled a couple plugs and the bottom were rusted, and we hooked a battery up to it and it wouldn't turn over. So I'm 99% sure the motors froze up. I need to go pull the rest of the plugs and pore some diesel in the cylinders to see if I can turn the crank. If not, I'll probably swap another engine into it and rebuild the 289 in case I need it for something else.

This one we had a lot better luck with. Got all 4 brakes where they are starting to turn, and jumped it with a screwdriver and the engine turned over. I couldn't find any of my spare carburetors, so I pulled the carb off the 66 (it's not going to need it anytime soon) so we can try and get it at least movable. And it's missing the trunk floor and the gas tank, so for now I can just pull the tank from the 66.

I want to swap them to disc brakes, but that's more than I can afford at the moment. And I'm trying to decide if I want to stay with 14s and just have to special order tires, or go to 15s.

The brake linings have probably swelled or the drums have rusted .On the back side of the backing plates ,at the bottom ,you will see a rectangular slot ,they may have a rubber plug in them . If they still have the rubber plug pull it out ,you can turn the adjuster from there with a wide blade screwdriver or buy a brake adjuster bar at Autozone .The adjuster has a star roller and the screw driver /brake adjuster hooks in the star so you can turn it .One direction will tighten ,and the other will loosen the shoes .
