mysterious brake problem

This morning I drove to work, which is only a mile or two, and my brakes were working fine. When I went to lunch I drove back home and my brakes were fine. A few hours later I drove to the gas station and about a 1/4 mile from down the road I hit the brakes and the pedal hit the floor without any pressure. I checked the fluid and the resivour was dry. I went to the parts store and got some fluid and filled it up, only to watch it leak right back out. The metal line going to the right rear was pulled away from the frame and the support clip was broken loose. The fluid was leaking from a small crack where the metal line meets the rubber line. I have no idea how this happened. Does anyone have any idea what might have caused this line to move? My car has no brake fluid, except the little that is left in the line. I am getting it checked out first thing in the morning. Sorry for the long post but I am not very happy.
