New Contour..Wont come out of reverse

My brother just got a 98 contour svt and drove it around for like 30 minutes went to a gas station and parked. Then when he tried to leave he put it in reverse and it would not come out of reverse at all. The shifter will still move up and down but not side to side and no matter where the shifter is it is still in reverse. Has anyone ever heard of this happening or have any idea how to fix it?
