New Shelby GT350H to be at New York Auto Show???

  • Sponsors (?)

How many more badging options can Ford rehash in an attempt to get people to buy their cars based on the company they once were? They've now run the gammit of GT names: 350, 500, 350H. The hot rumour is the GT/CS. Who are they marketing these cars to? Those of us that already own mustangs (the older guys at least) don't have to have the salesman explain to us what the H stands for or tell us that the Bullitt in the used car inventory was "inspired" by an old movie we've never seen starring a dead actor we only heard about in a Sheryl Crow song.

If they don't produce an obscene number of these special edition cars, the people that "gotta have one" but can't may opt to buy the more reasonably priced normal '05-'06. Thus, boosting sales and profits of a production car that should already be making them money. But, for a company that is teetering on bankruptcy to re-badge a car that has already been re-badged twice the past twelve months and try to generate buzz and rumours about a major unveiling just shows how naive they think the consumers are. Much like The Emperor's New Clothes, Ford is going to parade around showing off their new outfit for us to consume, confident that we will buy into it because we love our Emperor Ford. And nobody will want to point out that they are showing us nothing new at all, even if there is a big parade of sorts.

What's next, the Ghia or Grande?

The irony of it all is that Ford sold it's wholly owned Hertz rentals for 5.6 billion (or 15 billion including debt) late last year to focus more on car sales. Just goes to show that the H monicker is for marketing purposes based on the memory of a former inovator.
