Just saw a blurb on HNN (the news channel) that pranksters have been calling up fast food restruants and such and telling them to do stuff. They identify themselves as being from the corporate offices. Things the fast food people have been told to do (and then done), Test the building fire extinguisher system by setting it off, test the windows for breakable safety by throwing bricks at them, take off their clothes and go outside (have no idea what they are testing here).

Its called phone in vandalism. I call it stupid people that should not be answering the phone.

It doesn't take a phone call to make me think people can be talked into almost anything. I've sold cars for years. I watched someone sign up for $1107 a month for 60 months on a $37,000 car. The salesman told her it would be $1390 for 36 months, the customer said she didn't want to pay more than $600 a month, her mother said "You know a car like this is at least $1000 a month", and they met in their version of the middle.
Oh yeah, btw, she had a 704 credit score.

And you could live with yourself letting it go b/c they thought you were giving them the best deal and didn't know better. I quit the car bus just b/c of this exact thing.

People are too trusting and some don't have common sense, but that doesn't mean that you exploit it to get ahead.

Wasn't my deal. I know a lot of people don't believe in Karma, but I do. And after I worked there, I got smacked with the karma stick big time. Once I did learn better, I did nothing like that. I did subprime and still hooked people up. Hence the reason my phone still rings from people wanting to buy a car.

Good man. I walked out of the dealership when they told me to Lie or get fired...

I was raised with better morals then to take advantage of people.... even dumb ones.

The only people I took advantage of and really slammed were the ones that came in with a folder of internet research and a big chip on their shoulder. The minute I heard a car salesman insult(and trust me, it happens with every smug car purchaser), I was on my game to try to kill them. Treat me good, I returned the favor. Hence the reason most of my customers are in an equity position.

My buddy sold cars and he would try to hook up almost everyone if possible.

I got into a dealer with one thing in mind, get the price that I am looking for (which is a fair price) or just leave. I don't treat anyone badly, but I am not going to be lied to by a bunch of douches.

Yeah I could always spot the rip-off salesmen and the cool ones. They just treat you totally different.

One time I went to buy a car with a t-shirt on that read "I'm probably lying"......and it was true. :D

But I concur, people are stupid. The OP is kinda like that fast food chick that ended up suing or whatever.

Holy cow! Did you add in warenties or undercoating? You cant sign someone up at 60 points with a 704.... well you could but would you get all 54 points from the bank? Thats one of those times the F&I guy would make WAY more then the sales dude.
I did F&I and took some butt heads on a ride but nothing that severe. Mabey bump 5 points and get and electronic rust prevention device for their new Vette but thats about it! :rlaugh:
After a few years of it I quit too. The breaking point was when I sold a new Audi AllRoad when they first came out. We were not sure on price so I quoted her $49,000 and when it showed up MSRP was only $40,670. My boss said donttell her but she was a really nice lady and was dying of cancer. She wasnt rich and wanted to have a few toys to play with before she died. That deal really pissed me off so I left.
:stupid: If they were total ass hat know it alls then I raped them. Like this one douche I knew, he was a total ass hole and he started off with telling me how it was gonna be. We had a demo Vette and I told him it was $50,000 (we only had it at $42,000 at an 8lb deal), I hammered the ass hat for 2 hours and got him to pay $49,000 OTD AND sold him the rust proofing kit and the pass key anti theft :rlaugh: Or the old couple that had always been rude to our service department in the past. They wanted a new Passat and after I sat them down I showed them the MSRP and said "Because these cars are so popular I need an additional $3000 over sticker" I was shocked when they wrote me a check for every last penny I asked for

On the same not I have bent over backwards to help nice people out and would show them cars I knew I could sell for below cost cause of how long they have been on the lot. Or fight with the bank to get a lower APR so they could get the nicer car. :nice:
Of course some of them just did not believe me when I told them they were paying less for a car then we did. :rlaugh:

    WOW

Yeah I have seen stuff like that too.. Worse one I saw was the senile old man that bought a taurus off of the dealer I work for over something like 50k

A few years later his son who is some big shot lawyer found out and is now really really really pissed off over it.. not sure how it was resolved..

Well, it wasn't just 25%. You can advance 120% to 140% on the front end, plus pack the back with LAHA(credit life and disability), gap, etc...

Exactly. When I was running my showroom, if you treated me right, I was going into dealer cash because I knew you'd send me business.

I've never sold cars, but have had to deal w/ shyster salesmen. My problem is I can't tell the good guys from the bad anymore. Any tips?

Yes, I go prepared. I don't bring the internet folder, but I do my research as best as one can I guess. I just hate the haggling and running back and forth to the Mgr. That generally pisses me off and after a few times I leave. Always seemed like a waste of time or some big game to me. I don't act like an ass, but I hate the bastards who think they are doing me a favor by taking my money.

OTOH, you feel that they should sell you a car for invoice and attempt to make no money? They would love to not haggle and have you pay sticker..
As far as advice, currently, most car dealerships are just trying to move metal. Find out what interest rate you can get on your own and give them an honest number. They have a green book and can check ALL the local rates. Pick a car on the lot and offer them $100-200 over invoice(they will show you if you ask.. maybe more than once) If they can beat/meet your interest rate you can get, let them do the financing(they will appreciate this. They will either get a flat or a little money from the financing). Much as I hate to say it, in most cases, turn down anything offered to you by the finance manager. However, if you are not putting down at least 25%, I'd recommend GAP. It costs the dealership $300 or less. Pay no more than $350. If you do intend to get an extended warranty, make sure it is a manufacturer's product. Not an aftermarket company. In PA, a warranty can be marked up no more than 100%, in NJ there is no rule, but the bank will cap a dealer at 2000 for a 2wd warranty and 2500 for a 4wd warranty. In most cases they can add $100 to the cost and make it so if you make no claims on the warranty, you get back 100% of your purchase price. Nothing else that they offer you is worth it.
If you are going shopping, PM me with what you are looking for and I'll see what kind of information I can get you.

Dont go to the female ones, they will kill you if you cant negotiate well. You are usually better off finding the Mexican salesman that has a heavy accent. They will just repeat whatever their closer/desk says to say and you can just sit firm on your first low ball offer untill the sales manager comes out cause they are sick of wasting time on you.
The back and forth is the game, its their game and you need to play it. Usually for you to get the best deal you can the sales person will need to say "Let me check with the boss" at least 5 times, usually more. Just be patient, they are trying to wear you down and get you to say "Fine, lets just get it done". Also if you love the car dont let them know. You can let them know you like it but find stuff to complain about. Say "Its really close to what I wanted but I dont care for the color and I wanted the blah blah option package and this one dont have it"
Have to let them know you want it but dont absolutly have to have it. :nice:

    Hope it helps.

I absolutely hate playing that game. I also hate playing the numbers game.

The last 3 new cars I purchased. I have came into the lot with a price in mind, with some flex. My own financing, with no intent to trade in.

I understand the dealership needs to make money. I just do not appreciate how they go about it.
