Bang on. The problem with the 86 is the heads. They were upgraded in 87. The other issue is no fly cut pistons. So your aftermarket head choices are limited with out getting valve reliefs cut into the pistons.mattmcdan said:200 HP @ 4000 RPM

Still a damn good engine, and you can upgrade it like any other 5.0. I just pulled out my Stock 86' 5.0 with 150K on it, and it still ran perfect.
A picture says a 1000 words. The style factor alone is worth not spending too much time worrying about the few HP that the 86 motors were down. Like has already been said, all you have to do to bring it up to post 87 HP specs is install some E7 heads and a later upper intake. Both can be had for cheap to absolutely free since so many poeple have this stuff taking up space in the garage after swapping on aftermarket stuff. If its a solid car, jump on it.
