Question about swapping pedals

I'm in the process of swapping a t-45 into my '96 and I'm having trouble fitting the new pedal assembly. I've the the automatic brake pedal out, but I can't seem to fit the new brake and clutch pedal. The steering shaft is right in the way, do I need to remove this in order to fit the new pedals or am I just doing something wrong?

i loosened the part of the steering shaft and pushed it down a little and to the side...

watch out tho, it might cause some major alignment problems
