Question for those of you with a Tremec 3550 or TKO Alright.. So I bought a used 3550, and it wouldn't downshift into third and it whined loud in all gears but 4th. I got it rebuild and the guy fixed the third gear problem, but said he x-rayed and looked over all gears and bearings.. and he said he couldn't find anything wrong that would make the tranny whine. It's LOUD... but he said it's not a big deal and the tranny now looks like new (parts wise). Anyone else have a whine in their 3550? I spent 950 for the tranny, bell, and B&M shifter... And then had to spend another 738.00 on a rebuild... Talk about getting it right up the rectum. Nick
Most tremecs and tkos have a slight whine to them, some more then others. Unless you have shifting problems, then u shouldnt be worried about it.
Yeah, I've heard that some do have a whine, but I had a T-5 that whined the same way, in all gears but 4th, and I ripped the Input shaft gear completly off. lol! Just hope it's not an input shaft/countershaft problem. Nick
I would have liked to have seen that and what you were doing before it did it. Most gear whines are the meshing of the teeth. Ever heard a honda in reverse? They are the absolute loudest things I know i've heard. That however is due to straight cut gears. The straighter the cut (as opposed to hellical cut), the louder but stronger the gear is going to be. Which brings me to another one, the sound you hear on the racetrack while watching pro racing such as that of nascar. The sound you hear (you know exactly the one that comes from the car in accordance to revvs while accelerating/deccelerating) is actually all the straight-cut gears in the transmissions meshing
