Radar detector...

I've got a Cobra 9110. Relatively cheap, and the only ticket I've gotten since I've had it was from a cop not using radar. In fact, my friend was with me, and when he asked how much I thought the ticket was gonna be, I said, "Well, the radar detector didn't go off, so he probably didn't get a reading. So I'm guessing $80 for wreckless driving." Cop comes back to the car; $83.

Nothing too expensive is necessary. Even if you have a V1, it's not gonna save you from a stop watch, or an airplane.

Besides, if you pay more for a radar detector, you're going to rely on it. Then you'll find yourself getting even more tickets.

I've gotten one ticket in five years. The detector was on actually but I never had a chance b/c he was sitting in the median behind a small area of trees.

Other than that, its saved my arse many a times. I use some $50 whistler detector. All you need is the basic X, K, Ka bands and something thats 360* I got mine @ Wal-mart I think.

I have a 9 band Cobra radar detector with 360 degree laser detection and voice warning. I have had it for about four years now and I can't even begin to tell you how many times it's paid for itself. I have no tickets on my record, and I can assure you that I'd have plenty if I hadn't bought this thing. I paid $179 for it on sale and it was worth every penny. I highly recommend getting a Cobra....haven't heard anything bad about them. Although I can say I have heard that Whistler brand detectors don't work that well, and Escort detectors are just pricey b/c they have junk you don't need, like a built in compass.

Getting a cheap radar detector is worthless. Its like transcontinential seafaring on a sailboat with out a telescope. If your going to get a radar detector, get the best! I'm actually selling an Escort Passport 8500 (#1 rated detector by radartest.com and others) with all factory paperwork and the case / box for $225 shippied. I know its a little more than you want to spend, but its the best on the market. I speed 20 over a lot and have only gotten 1 ticket. I was going 35 over and dropped down 15mph before he clocked me! If you keep it 15mph over the limit you should be able to slow down enough with this. PM me if your interested.

Escorts aren't pricey because they have a compass, they are pricey because they are the leading edge company. The 8500 I speak of will give you at least 150 ft. more than any other detector mentioned on this thread. This one doesn't have a compass, but it does have a neat volt meter that tells you how much voltage the car has. When the screen lights with a detectoin the meter goes away and a signal strength bar is displayed. It can track multiple signals simultaneously.

I'm selling it because I bought an SR7 (hard-wired 8500).

Tell me how $50 for a "cheap" detector and only 1 ticket in 5 years = "worthless"? Go ahead and pay $200+ for a radar detector that wont do you hardly any more good than my $50 piece has done me. That makes sense. you can't justify the cost, so don't try.

False hope 9/10 times.. people get them thinking it's a free ticket to speed all they want with no trouble.. I have a couple problems with this.. first, it simply isn't a foolproof thing.. you will get a ticket if you rely on it over good judgement.. secondly at least for a few of my friends, since it causes speeding for them, wreckless driving is hand in hand

I myself am considering purchasing one simply because there are times where you stop glancing down and get going a bit over and it would be nice to have to keep you in check just in case.. itd also be nice to alert you to emergencies ahead of you

Well all I'm saying is read the reports.

Hes considering spending mid-grade buck for something that is either going to help him save money in the long run or be a piece of plastic and flashing lights on his dash board. All I'm saying is the best is quite ahead of the rest.

I've had "cheap" radar detector and even radar detector and jammer combinations. Dropped all that crap and bought top of the line. It has saved me countless times as Ohio has the most traffic enforcement in the US and is 5th in most advanced radar / laser guns. Yes I do research and homework before I buy something. Now I feel "safe" travelling 15mph over because I know that if I hear my detector go off, I'll be able to brake enough without having any problems reaching the speed limit before he can lock me in.

A quick little story: I was doing 70 in a 50, see LASER on the detector. I'm thinking oh ****. Laser is really bad to detect because it has the smallest beam (7 ft wide compared to something like 2514 for X-band radar). I drop to 40 after slamming on the brakes and go by. Cop pulls out and follows me. He pulls me over and asks,"Why you doing 40 in a 50 zone?" I was baffled that he didn't clock me at the higher speed. Believe me or not this thing is awesome. I just bought something of equal quality that is built into the car instead of removeable. My new one helps slightly better as the detectors have three modules it detects from (2 front, 1 back). That is why I'm selling the Passport.

With cheap detectors, everything sets it off: your neighbor opens their garage door, you go pass CVS and the auto doors trigger it, an airplane goes by, it just magically goes off for no damn reason, someone in Buenos Aires turned on a microwave. Whatever you get false alerts. I spent a little extra and got something that I can rely on, not something that may help me. Plus if you still feel unsafe you can add-on a proven jammer, the ZR3 shifter.

I had a Phazer jammer and a LRD-5100 Uniden detector combo and before that a "cheap" off-the-store-shelf Cobra. Time after time I would creep over the speed limit, SEE the cop with my own eyes and spike the brakes. Then while slowing down my detector would alert me. Seems kinda worthless, no?

M9rkym9rk112 it is your decision completely to decide to purchase and which to purchase. You asked for advice, I'm just giving you my opinion and wisdom as I have many hours and days looking up info on radar detectors, what the police around me have, etc. On my way to college there are 11 potential places I've seen police hide. Thats 11 possible police cars I have to see in 26 miles. Then to work I may see up to another 7. Yes on a cold day in hell I can see 18 police cars before walking back into my doorway at home. I bought the best because I have a hefty threat everyday and I drive excessively all the time. If your just nudging the over limits or you see a cop once in a blue moon go for something cheaper. But if you get caught after buying that lesser detector, your going to wish you bought something better. My opinion and advice: Figure out what kind of driver you are, what threats you face, and how much are (2) tickets in case. Looking that way an expensive radar detector is still cheaper than the insurance premiums raises and the two ticket prices.

So everyone else go ahead raise your BS flags, call me out to get profit for myself, whatever you may think. I know that when I'm being stalked on the highways, that I'll know about well before the cop can do anything about it.

I was riding in my friends m3 last friday night, and he decided to show off a little and brought his car up to about 140 briefly. he has one of those really expensive valentine one radar detectors that are $300+. I was looking at it, and I saw it go off for a spilt second at when he was accelerating. I didn't think much of it at the time. so he slowed down to about 80mph, and cruised down the freeway for another minute or two, when bam cop lights behind us. so we pulled over and he said he clocked us at 110mph and still accelerating. then continued to explain to us about if we want to go that fast then we should stay in the center lanes, because dear pop out of the trees and go through windshields all the time in that area. he eventually let us go, giving him a ticket for 80mph instead of 110.
A lot of cops in the area I live are using a point and click type radar gun now...this means, the cop aims his gun at you car hits the button, and in less then a second has your speed. Unlike the old type radar guns that were always left on, and you could pick it up a mile away. I took my radar detector out of my car just because it was more annoying then useful. If you must get a radar detector get a cheap one like a cobra. I really dont find the expensive ones to be worth the price.

I have 3 (one in each car) and couldnt imagine driving my stang without one. Get one that detects POP mode. My latest is a Whistler Pro 73... real nice!

Never had a ticket, the thing always detects Mass cops well in advance.

we have 2... one in my dads truck... one in my bros stang... and i am getting mine soon so i can stop stealing it from my dad... they both have the Cobra 9210, i plan on getting that, or one of the next steps up, because i can dangit...

i definately would not mind one now...last night i was just cruising in a 55mph zone, had the cruise set at like 63-64mph, i met a cop and he pulled me over...told me i was doing 67. he let me off with a warning, but it would have been nice to avoid the near heartattack that i had.

Its a really nice detector. My only gripe is that it could be louder. With the top down and music on it simply isnt loud enough. Nice detector though, I love the thing and paid about 130 shipped on ebay.
