I have a detector, has saved me a couple times, but 98% of the time, its nothing. Its illegal for me to use in VA, but the one time I did use it, it saved me from a getting a ticket by a state trooper that I couldnt see cause it was dark. Also saved me once in MD. Here in PA though, local cops cant use radar, only state police, and encountering one is rare let alone if they even have their radar turned on.

I will always have my Radar detector turned on at all times.
They are not perfect, but most of the time you will know when a police
unit is near. When I go around a turn or over a hill I slow down. And never
speed if you are the front car in a group of cars. You will learn where all the false signals occur when you drive the same route every day. Mine is
a cheap Radio Shack unit. They will pay for them self.

If you buy a BELL radar detector you will love it. In both my vehicles I have a radar detector and I swear I drive by it. It has saved me probably 100 or more times. It always goes off plenty in advance and after a while, you will learn how to read it. Meaning what is really a cop vs. what is not ...

As for alarm systems, I have an OLD Viper system .. it's pretty cool I guess. I can roll my windows up and down, has a motion sensor (kinda useless), and a few other bells and whistles. I know of two times in the 6 years i've had it, that it's detered a potential theif. One time someone broke my window and it went off .. someone called the cops and they arrested the guy.

My 2 pennies.

Exactly!!!!:nice:
If you buy a cheap radar detector, that's what you get.....a cheap detector!
Spend the money and get a good Bel or V-1. Comparing a v-1 or a high end Bel is like comparing a KB to a Turbonator:D
I don't use my detector in the city, as when it goes off you have no idea wether the cops are ahead, behind or off on a side street. Besides, if you speed in the city your an idiot. Save it for the freeway/highway.

I think radar detectors and car alarms are both things that people often spend way too much money on.

I think the most you need to spend on a radar detector is $100 or so and I do not recommend car alarms at all.

agree. i have a passport 8500X50 and cant live without it also i have a compustar 2WSS that i cant live without. if you have the money its all worth it. just added security, cant hurt you any having either one if you know how to use them right.

I got an Escort 8500, saved me quite a few times, still not too many lasers in Houston area, but I am just glad for the times it has saved me, I think I paid full price back when they were the newer ones... now its the X50 i think...

Keep this in mind. A radar detector only has to work once to pay for itself. Over the years my radar detectors have potentially saved me thousands of dollars in fines. Buy a quality unit like stated above. V1 or a Passport 8500 both rank at the very top. Learn to use it correctly and you'll find that it's a worthy mod for any vehicle.

i have a road angel radar detector and a clifford all singing all dancing alarm....

anti tilt, motion sensor all round, glass shatter sensors, remote start and if my car ever gets stolen the alarm company will pay me the value of the car guarented! dont really use the roadangel much as i know the roads i drive on, but i have always had a decent alarm on all my expensive cars, justfor piece of mind and cheaper insurance really!

I just don't see how a radar detector can save you money. By the time your car is hit with radar, laser or whatnot, the officer already has your speed.
My boss is a former deputy and we have state patrol, deputies and local police stop by to chat and they all have said the same thing: you're already tagged when the alarm goes off.
I just know where they usually hide and read traffic ahead of me.

Well that just shows you do not understand how to use a radar detector effectively is all.

It saves you money by reducing or eliminating the potential for a traffic infraction which could result in a monetary fine.

If you are going to be "leading the pack" running out front with a devil may care attitude no radar detector in the world is going to save your butt. A radar detector is merely a tool, and like all tools you need to know how and when to use it properly to receive the most benefit.

As I stated in an earlier reply, when coming around blind turns, over a hill
or leading the pack, yes you are easy prey. But you will also pick up strong signals of a cop shooting other cars ahead of yourself. You will pick up a weaker signal if thier rader is even turned on, even if they are not using it,
not just when they are aiming and shooting a certain car. Of course the
closer they are the stronger the signal.
