Ive had my current Fox for 7 years now. I bought it on a whim for dirt cheap. It was rough. Not send it to the crusher rough, but man did it need a lot of work. I Dd'd for a couple years while doing small things to it and then stripped it down to a shell to completely redo it. Long story short a divorce and cross state move forced me to rush putting it back together. Short cuts were made for for the sake of time and I've spent the last five years fixing all sorts of issues that came about from just slapping everything together. The car pretty much hasnt left running project status. In 3 years I doubt I've put 500 miles on the car. I've held onto it out of stubbornness on wanting to see it finished the way I imagined it in my head. I'm starting to doubt that will ever happen. I'm thinking it may be time to let it go. My oldest son is about to start driving and I'm going to need a reliable second vehicle. Should I keep it, tear it down again and fix all the details or just sell it and put the money towards another car? Here's how she sat on the last time I took her out.

You won't get what you want out of it until the damned thing is done. You won't be done until you've taken it all back apart and done things that you initially wanted to do. Whatever money you get out of it isn't going to make much of a dent in the used car that you will need for DD. If you DO sell it, you'll be tearing into some other car (that's not this one) and will have to re-accomplish what you've already done.

Mine has been packed away for some time. No way I could get out near what I have into it. There's still a ton more that I want to do too! So she will wait until I have the time, money, and energy to do all that chit that I already know that I want to do.
 
Yeah, not worried about recouping any cash already into it. That's lost. Any future money spent on it is also a wash. She's purely a hobby. Money and time have been huge factors in the car taking so long. Maybe I just need to say :leghump: it and put myself hip deep into it. It's not costing me anything to keep it.

Needs all new weather seals, interior needs to be finished the right way. A lot of it is just sitting in there. Needs heater core and ac reinstalled, exhaust needs to be completely redone, wiring has faults in the harness, front suspension needs to be completely replaced. I'm not happy the engine bay. I really want to yank the engine and paint it. My overall goal was to build it so that I wouldn't have to think twice about jumping in and driving comfortably on road trips if I wanted to. I'm leary about driving it across town.
 
I guess it depends on a few factors.

It's not costing anything to keep it, but do you have room for it with the boy's car also?

if you sell it will you want another fox?

if so,

Will it be easier to buy what you want instead of fixing this car? If no, keep it. If yes, let it go.
 
Do you have the time and money to do what needs to be done? Do you WANT to spend the time and money? If the answer is no,then you should probably sell it. Mine has sat for almost 2 years(less than 1000 miles on it in that time). Mine was mostly due to time constraints but money was an issue also. It still isn't going to be "done".

I wouldn't sell mine unless it was a complete financial crisis. But that's me. Like you said it isn't costing you much(if anything) sitting. :shrug:
 
I can't believe I am in this time of my life, but I have considered selling mine recently. It needs paint and a few interior parts, other than that, everything is brand new over the last 4 years.

I put maybe a 1000 miles a year on it. I have two kids now, and I have been toying with the idea of a travel trailer. I am at a different stage of my life and want to spend time with my family. Decisions......

Parking space isn't a big deal. I have room for another vehicle. My daily right now is a wrangler and mathematically it isn't making sense to have two toys as my sole means of transportation. my ideal replacement for the Fox would be a new gt but that isn't in the budget right now. Realistically I should get a budget daily like a focus or civic and let the boy drive the jeep.

I DD'd a civic for 5 years and loved it. All I had to do to it was fuel it and change oil. And, believe it or not, with a 5 spd it really was enjoyable to drive. *disclaimer* it was stock. No fart cans or wings..
 
Keep it road worthy and do small projects that can be completed in short time spans. long periods of downtime kill interest, unless your name is Mike or Scott.

Listen to this guy,...he is the poster child for biting off more than you can chew, self burn out, and starting down a road to nowhere w/ little more than a hand written set of instructions on a cocktail napkin.

We are in the same boat. :( If it's not the same boat well... we can reach each other's anchor lines without leaving our seats.

I'm at the point where I know exactly what needs to be done but doesn't start any of it because I can't do all of it.
(read ^this^ through, it does make sense. I promise)

I think I'm just going to start making dates. A date for control arms... That will be my first. No wait... Rear end bushings first. *sigh*


Hell... If I lived near Bill I'd never turn wrenches on anything except for the Mustang. I think the hardest part to keep alive is the wanting to go outside and turn MF wrenches.

We all see it.

It always seems that the fox that has been the go to for consumption of disposable income, sooner or later becomes the target for the headsman axe.

And it always seems that that happens for one of two reasons:

Money.
Money.


One, is the lack of it.
Two is the decision to stop spending it.

From the pics, the car looks nice. Obviously it runs, which is already something that can't be said by a lot of us here. If you are not strapped, and you live in a part of the US where a cheap Japanese beater could be bought for a couple of grand that isn't a rusted POS, and you can stand to drive it, you'll thank yourself for doing that when you open the garage door, and that white car is still sitting there.

I have completely removed the Mustang from the monetary pool and declared it a family monument.

Therefore, it may one day consume taxes of the Kingdom but is no longer considered an asset for trade or negotiation.

My time to be spending money on this car is rapidly decreasing, so I am a few months away from one big hail mary to get it to a point that I can live with not doing much with it for several years, outside of shows and cruises. I have a feeling 2016 will be the year of the offspring in my house...

This now #2's car. Sitting in front of the 94 escort that saw the wrong end of a bumper hitch. This was #1's car before he decided that he would rather make an 800.00 mo. Pymt on a new Wrangler ( including ins.) instead of driving this one.

It came with a New 3.8, and I had to rebuild the C-5, bought for 2500.00. This car has been back and forth between Shreveport La. ( #1's AFB) w/o incident 4 times since we bought it.

#1 decided that he didn't like driving a car that he couldn't roll the drivers window back up, leaked oil and smoked, and couldn't be relied on. So he bought a new 4 door Wrangler.

Since #2 Crashed his car, it seemed like a perfect target destination for this car, so I went to Shreveport last week when my oldest had to return to work, after coming back from Guam.

To the Senior Airman's embarrassment, he watched as I removed the door panel, replaced the window motor, removed the shower curtain he was using for a window, and rolled the window up and down after 30 minutes.

( he had been driving it back and forth to work w/ the shower curtain for a month before that)

Then the 15 minute task of fixing the burning oil thing w/ a new driver side valve cover gasket.

45 minutes later,in was ready to drive the thing back the 440 miles from Barksdale AFB to Mikes house.

The thing ran perfectly.

What keeps these cars safe from the future chopping block is to get them to a drivable, dependable, state then keep them there.

That's a sweet 4 eye. Methinks if I had just kept this one stock and replaced the parts that were worn instead of trying to turn it into a pro touring gt car it would still be chugging along just fine. It does move under its own power I just need to roll up my sleeves and open the wallet.

I drove a Focus rental for a week last week, just the basic model, no turbo. It ran great had tons of room and Id recommend it as a DD. You should check one out.

But do keep the Fox.
