trying to find out tranny info

A few days ago...FlavaDave and I were rollin in my 87 mustang lx 5.0. He noticed that my tranny is humming pretty loud and said i should take the 4 bolts out from around the stick(center console is out so I could replace carpet) to see how much fluid is in there. So I did but not sure what I'm looking at. I take the cover off and there is a little fluid at the bottom under the machined piece that holds the ball from the shifter...(sorry for not being technical) should the box be full or no...?

You can't view fluid level from the shifter.

On passenger side of trans, there are two plugs that accept a 3/8 drive rachet. Top is fill, bottom is drain. Remove the top one and you should feel fluid all the way to the edge of the fill hole.

You can fill with fluid from shifter cup hole, or from fill port on side with a pump.
