Hey All, Just looking for opinions on spark plug brand, and stock cap, rotor and wires. I was thinking Autolite plugs, Accel cap/rotor set and ????plug wires. All comments welcome. Thanks Gene
all that sounds good, do a fuel and air filter, clean the IAC, and depending on the mileage it cant hurt to change the o2 sensors
stay away from cheap caps they get hot and cause misfires at high rpm autozone brand is the worst for wires i use the 9mm ford racing they hold up good and they are only like $40
Motorcraft/Ford for everything. Motorcraft fuel filter Motorcraft PVC Motorcraft Spark Plugs (motorcraft > Autolite...they are not the same) Motorcraft Cap/Rotor Motorcraft Oil Filter Ford Racing 9mm wires Most parts store crap is...well crap. And if you get a parts store PVC, it's usually 90* angle, while OEM is straight up and down, so it's best to just stick with Motorcraft and Ford parts whenever you can.
The Ford PCV's I've been getting lately have two 90 barbs. I've not received a straight one like Mike mentioned. FWIW, if someone has a metal PCV valve with a plastic attachment for the barbs, often you can break the plastic off, leaving a straight metal fitting to attach a hose to. Don't forget the new MOTORCRAFT PCV grommet (so you have a tight fit) and to clean the breather or replace it. I'm not as rigid with plug, wire, cap/rotor, and fuel filter recommendations as some other people are.
Thanks All, " do a fuel and air filter, clean the IAC, and depending on the mileage it cant hurt to change the o2 sensors" WHAT IS THE IAC? Fuel and air filter are new and car appears to have 34,000 miles but it it's still 22 years old. It looks like nothing in the engine compartment has ever been touched! I am totally new to working on these cars as well as any cars with computers/electronic control systems. All suggestions and guidance is appreciated. Thanks Again Gene
IAC= Idle Air Control Valve it is the cylindrical thing attached to the throttle body Hope that helps -Josh-
Josh, Please inform the uninformed. How do I go about cleaning the IAC? I assume I remove the IAC? What Chemical(s) and procedure(s) for cleaning? Thanks Gene
Gene, don't clean the IAC unless you're prepared to replace it. Sometimes they don't take nicely to being cleaned. This might help with identifying it and cleaning it For identifying stuff under the hood, This might help. Thanks to Stang 22 and Almost Stock for the diagram.
For myne i just used brake clean and a old tooth brush, the brake clean will get most of the carbon off.
Under direction of an old guy I: Removed the IAC, Used Carb cleaner and an old tooth brush to remove all the carbon. Then replaced the O-Ring and put it all back together. Works great!
