Tuning help needed in South Denver area

Well, I finally have the car to the point where it will start right up as soon as the key is turned. It runs ok, but when I hit is with the timing gun, it is sitting a 28* BTDC with an idle at about 750 rpm's. I can rev it to 3K without anything but the sweet sound of power, but the exhaust smells of heavy gas. Kind of burns the eyes.

If I try to bring the timing to where is should be at about 15* from what I have read, the idle gets really rough and the car shuts down.

I think I may have the distributor "stabbed" slightly off? Any ideas? I need to get on the road so I can get it over to a shop and really get dialed in.
