It is my understanding that the last 6 digits of a VIN is the production number. This VIN is off a web-site in Austin for a v-6 coupe. Are they already past 198,000 Mustangs?! I thought they were trying to build 170,000 units.

Am I confused, or what?

The serials start at 100000. So this is unit 98,888.

Why would you subtract 100001, and not 100000. I think sam_abuelsamid is right. 198888-100000=98888.

fixted, but actually someone told me that they start at 100001 not 100000. I don't which one is right but who cares. in that sense 100002 would be the first one and 198888 would be the 98887th

My Sequential Number (Position 12-17) is 121569...so then I am Stang #21,568 in the 05 Model Year. :nice:

:bang: Too late to decode this one.....I am sure there is an easier way to do this and this is not updated. It is lacking the 4.0L engine for a passanger car in the V-6 and I don't see Flat Rock as an assembly plant.... But...this is a nice link to know what goes into a VIN...

ok - is there a way to tell when the car was manufactured from the serial number? if my vin ends in 182087, then i know its either 82087th or 82086th car produced, but when exactly was that?

Well, I just had warranty work done and noticed something interesting on the work order. On the top right, it says the following:

    Production: 021505

Now, my car was built week of Feb 7. Can 021505 mean that the production date was Feb 15? I don't know why this would be on a work order. Maybe they needed it to see if the warranty issue was taken care of at the plant. Or maybe it means something totally diiferent and it really isn't the true build date

So, my last 6 digits are 107976. Does this make it the 7,976th '05 GT, or the 7976th '05 Mustang of any style? Just curious.

I have noticed a similar dating issue on my service work orders from the Dealership. May be the end of the production run? Maybe one of our Ford EEs on the forum could tell us.

Well either they've fixed it or there's something else throwing it off; mine came up as a V8:

Um, does your car have 4 lights on front, or only 2?
