I have a small block with only 3000k miles, and twice now, I've have a bad leak out of the bottom of the pump. Both times, I have removed the pump to find the steel backing plate warped into the pump shaft. This warping is causing the gasket seal to fail. I have no idea what is doing this. Any ideas?
There is a groove at the bottom of the timing chain cover. Is that supposed to serve as a vent for the dead space between the cover and the water pump backing plate?
