what was your first experience with a 5.0 Mustang?

Sophmore year of high school. My buddy bought a 90 gt 5spd. He put 3.73 gears, cold air, tb and spacer, took off the cats and had true dual with 40 flows.....To this day I can still hear the sound of that car in my head! Best sounding car EVER!!! I bought a 82 firebird, and always wished I got a foxbody instead....Like I said before, Im a Firebird guy, but theres just something about a foxbody that I just can't get away from.

My 1st experience was when my stepdad brought home a brand new red 1982 5.0. GT with T's and recaro interior ( like the pace cars ), drove it around when I was a teen and he still owns it. she needs a resto but nothing beats a bone stock down to the original TRX tires GT even if it shows age. when it becomes mine I will restore it :nice:

Always wanted on in the 90's, but didn't get my license til 98. My first stang was a 95 GT vert, but my first fox was a 1992 GT hatch. 5spd, white, black interior. All stock besides Flowmaster mufflers, and a CAI. The thing was a Florida car for all but 3,000 miles (had 95K on it) and was mint. I loved that car.

I was maybe 12 13 years old or so and we would have Thanksgiving at my aunt and uncles house every year. My uncle had a sweet 88 Vette that I loved up untill my 17 year old cousin got his first car.... 90 GT vert 5 speed car. That year on Thanksgiving I got a ride with my cousin driving dad in the front seat and me in the back. We went out on a main road and my dad told him to jump on it, hearin those flow masters scream with the top down kickin sideways was the most amazing thing I have ever felt, been a Mustang guy every since.

I was born in 1980 so when I was coming of age the Fox Body Mustang was one of the kings of the street. Sure you had some LT1 cars and stuff like that out and about but a bolt on Mustang could take one of those down.

I got a ride in a Emerald Green LX hatch that had atleast Flowmasters and possibly gears done, I was about 14 or 15 then and was completely in awe of the sound and torque of the vehicle. Had never felt anything like it. About a year later a good buddy of mine somehow gained access to a Red 89GT and we ragged on it for an entire weekend. It was a 5 spd car and for being 16 my buddy could slide that thing around like an old hand. Probably one of the best weekends of my life. I think we listened to Alice in Chains Dirt album about 12 times over :D.

Wanted one ever since. Had to do a couple front wheel drive vehicles before I got my first Fox body @ age 20. Sold it like an idiot about 6 months later and made a few thousand on the deal. Wanted one again ever since but couldnt stay out of trouble long enough to make it happen. Just picked up a 91 Black GT 5spd last weekend. And so the story begins...

I was never really into cars, when I was about 14 I was big into R/C off road cars. My Dad wanted me to get a late 60 Camaro or Chevelle (Chevy guy), but he just couldn't convince me that I needed to get a project car at 14 to have running by the time I was 16. Well at the time he had his 70 Chevelle Malibu getting restored and we would occasionally go the the builder's house to see the progress.

One Saturday night we were there, and a friend of the builder's son was over with his Fox body Mustang hatch which ran solid 12's. My Dad thinking all I needed was a ride in a fast car to fix my problem convinced the kid to give me a ride in it. We went out and he banged on the gears as hard as he could. We came back and much to my Dad's disappointment I wasn't impressed.

Couple years later I got a pickup as my first ride, and finally found my way when I stumbled onto my 70 Dodge. Traded the truck for it and have been a car guy ever since. Never have gotten a Chevy like my Dad wanted, have had lots of Mopars, and a couple Mustangs though (both Foxes until recently). However first ride in a fast car was a Mustang Fox body. :)

I remember it like it was yesterday... family friend owned a.....
Black 88 GT 5 Speed
equal lengths
H-pipe
Flowmasters
3:73's
1.77 RR's
Pro 5.0 Shifter
Hoosier Quick Times
Enough said!

He then built a 88 SSP which I bought from him in 94 @ 17 yrs old
And The Rest Is History
Great Thread!

When i was growing up my dad only drove chevys and amc's so thats what i knew until..... i was 12 walking home from school when i saw a blue 89 gt straight dukes of hazarding around a street corner burning tires right in front of me. It was the gas station owner from the neighborhood. from that day forward i was hooked. when i was 15 my dad tryed to buy me a 69 camaro but i shot it down and bought a 84 gt basket case for $1000, it came in boxes mostly. i built that car to a point then sold it and bought a 83... wrecked that and it wasnt until this last summer i bought my 87 lx.

I bought my first fox chassis Mustang new in 1980, but it was a 2.3 Turbo hatch that was terrible in the snow, so I traded it in for a new 83 Escort GT which was a real POS. The dealer took it back in trade for a new 84 GT 5.0 w/t-tops and I was hooked on the 5.0. I have had 7 other 80's 5.0 Mustangs since then and still have my 86 GT convertible (bought new) and a 90 5.0 LX convertible. They have a rawness and harshness that make them more fun to drive than the newer ones. Plus they are a relative bargain to buy and insure now too.:nice:

I was 17ish and driving an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme that my father gave up as a high school graduation present. At the time I was hanging with a crowd of kids in Reading, MA who all owned either 5.0 LX Mustangs, Grand Nationals or 70's muscle (including a sweet V8 Vega). We would crowd up at the local BK and race up and down the street. Not me in a v6 Olds, but I would usually jump in with my buddy in his 1987 Bright Regatta Blue LX. They had the street race scene down to a science, and I wanted in. I totalled the Olds one rainy night after a college party and parlayed the insurance proceeds into a 1988 LX 5.0, my first new car.

I ordered the LX from the factory with the only options being premium sound, tinted windows, rear defrost and of course the motor/suspension package. $10,700. My goals were to make the car a road weapon and race the crap out of it, but once I got it I couldn't bring myself to beat the thing. I began modifying it right away when I pulled the air silencer in the fender. Trouble was, back in 1988 noone knew what these cars were all about, let alone tweak them. Most of what was done was trial and error based on magazine articles and guesstimates based on what worked on carb cars. A far cry from what is available these days.

So far it has never seen a winter, doesn't have any door dings or rust, and has been tastefully modified. Still has under 20,000 miles on the odometer, too.

It's funny how life changes you. Between the time when I was 18 up until about 5 years ago I could count on one hand how many times people had sat in the back seat, but here I am at 42 with 2 kids, I love, love, love to take them along. My son gets a kick out of climbing under the car with me and I'm more than happy to teach him how to use his brain and get his hands dirty. Good old fashioned American stuff that seems to be a disappearing quality.

I remember my first encounter with what was essentually a "mild bolt-on" 88GT. This was around late '89, when I still my 85GT. At the time I didn't know much about modding and my only mod was mufflers. That GT absolutely worked me up and down the block. Turns out the most significant mods the car had was a 4.10 and pullies. Doesn't seem like much now but since the guy also knew how to drive it was ugly. lol

Speaking of family; I have a son on the way and I can't wait to get him involved in these cars. :flag:

My Dad bought his second Mustang in 1988, replacing his powder blue 86. Then I was born in 90. I grew up around the car my entire life and always thought it was the coolest thing I've ever seen. I can remember listening to my favorite 90's music in the back seat of the car, damn near burning a whole through Metallica's black album in the old cassette deck. I remember arguing with the neighbor kids about who's parents car was fastest (my next door neighbor thought his dads Civic was faster because the speedo went past 85 :rlaugh: ) I remember practicing driving for the first time on the back roads of my old town in it... and most of all, I remember when he handed me the keys to it when I was 16... and subsequently getting into a TON of trouble shortly after. I have alot more respect for speed limits now, though my past has a tendancy to haunt me. Managed to get on the front page of the local and state in it, "mustang clocks in at 108"... big trouble. Now, I'm more focused on breathing new life into it so I can enjoy it for aslong as I can, rather than trying to break the laws of god man and physics with it.

The car became pretty synonymous with me, everyone knew when they saw me on the streets. People in my highschool would always tell me when they saw me around town and stuff, kinda became another identity for me.

It's a project for me, something I enjoy somedays and loathe others. It isn't perfect, but I try my best to take good care of it like my Dad did before me. Hence the name "Legacy".

My brother bought an '82 GT new, and before long he had 351W heads, headers, and a real dual exhaust on it. I got my license the following year and got to drive it a few times. The fact that I'm alive to tell about it is credit to at least one miracle involving cresting a hill doing about 130 and finding a slow-moving dump truck in my lane and a car coming the other way. I got around the truck on the shoulder still going hell-bent speeds and managed not to fill his seat with ****. I don't know how I accomplished either of them :D That was a badass car and from then on, I knew I'd have my own someday.

My uncle always had cool cars but never a new one. Everytime we visited them the first thing I did was check out what he was working on. We went to see them when I was 17 and he had a brand new 87 5.0, 5 speed mustang lx hatch, blue on blue.

He offered to take me to the local cruise night and I was not going to say no. It was a fun ride for me since my parents never had any fast cars. As we were leaving we were turning to the entrance ramp to the highway and a GTO went straight. He looked over at me and said "I wonder if that GTO would have wanted to go if we went straight".

In 1993 at the age of 23 I bought my first new car a 5.0, 5 speed LX hatch and I still have it.

The 1st time I took notice of the Mustang 5.0 was in high school when I was in my friend's 87 Iroc Z. He pulled up to my other friend's mom's 87 Mustang GT. They raced and mommy won. That caught my attention. Plus we had a ball talking about it at school the entire day!

Then in college my best friend bought a '92 5.0 LX and that's when I really fell in love with the mustang. At the time I had an 87 Supra and I was tired of him smoking me....so I sold the rice burner and bought a white '93 GT. Since then I've owned four 5.0's and one winter 4 banger. You should see the surprised looks I get when I meet people on craigslist for mustang parts. They just don't expect an asian dude coming for mustang parts. haha...what can I say...I love the speed, the look and the beautiful rumble of the 5.0. In my humble opinion, it's the best.

My best friend is one of those guys who wheels and deals and trades cars a lot, and he got into Mustangs before i did. His first 5.0 was an '87 LX 5 speed. I used to have this thing where any time he'd get a car that was fast, i would "test drive it". The first time i took that car out, i was hooked. It was bone stock and running an open H pipe and sounded like pure hell ripping through the gears. I knew right then i had to have one. About 6 months later i bought my first Mustang which was an '88 GT...i haven't looked back since. This was about 12 years ago.

Actually now that i think about it, that was my first "5.0 experience". Years before that when we were 16ish he had a 2.3 hatch that i used to drive a LOT...before i even had a license lol.
