Whats a fair price to sell my old 8"

    Whats a fair price to sell my old 8" axle to a local hobbiest? All stock w/ lots of miles.

    If it just bone stock never been rebuilt or anything, probably 150, 200 or less.

    i sold mine about a year ago for $125. It worked fine, but was old, had a ton of miles and could use a rebuild.

    I've been trying to give the stocker out of my '65 for years with no takers. I may just give up and swap it into my '68 so I can run wider rims.

    $50 is a fair price for an 8" rear. I've got two 9" housings I've tried to move at that price with no takers. (bare housings from pickups, both good fodder for a narrowing job)

    65-66 Drum-to-drum, used, non-limited, around here I gotta go with Shogun, $150-$200. Might be different where you are.

    I once offered mine to a guy who was converting his 6-cyl '66 coupe over to V8 (for free, of course) and he had the balls to ask if I could bring it to his house because his truck got such bad mileage.

    seriously. ive been looking for one for a while now. i thought i had one from a 68 ranchero but my dads buddy ended up using it for this old like 50s or sooner chevy truck.

    I would seriously hope that you're not planning on making any more offers of free (or cheap) stuff to this particular jacka** again, zoo!

    If you were to have made this deal, and the guy stuffed it under his car without even checking the oil condition or levels, he would be pestering you 6 months later because it failed on him and want a refund of any monies paid PLUS the towing charges back to his house! How do I know? Been there, done that! Dude bought a '76 Chebbie pickup from me at a ridiculously low price ($600) because I wanted to dump it after buying a new truck. 1 MONTH AND THREE DAYS LATER, he wants his $600 back, plus $350 towing charges AFTER I TOLD HIME PRIOR TO THE SALE that the crank snout had a broken keyway and that he needed to get the engine rebuilt before driving it more than maybe 20 miles!
    I gave him his original $600 back (and ate the re-registering charges) and told the jerk he was SOL on the towing; because I told him it needed specific repairs before I took his money.
    The small-claims judgement he filed against me was found in my favor; because his wife backed ME up.

    ks65stang: Offer the estimated amount recommended by posters to this thread; but tell the guy that, "It has (xxx times a thousand) miles on it and that the waranteed condition is "AS is, WHERE IS"; and do so in front of reliable witnesses! That way, the deal can't possibly 'come back on you'.


    OBTW; 6 months after shucking out $647 (original purchase price + resgistration) on the truck, I got $1500 trade-in allowance on the pickup towards the new-off-the-lot purchase of my wife's Pontiac Grand Prix, which replaced her previous car that had been totaled in a 't-bone' by a drunk driver.
    The deal was part of GM's recall on that era's pickup models due to "exploding gas tank" issues.
    The Pontiac's story was less than stellar; but that's another long, sad tale.
    Suffice it to say, that particular POS doesn't have a home in our driveway anymore; my wife has a more reliable vehicle now.

    Although it's kinda o/t (ok, a LOT o/t), here's another story aboput free parts. I inherited my way of thinking from my Dad, and that is, if you have spare parts and they didn't cost you anything, why not give'em to another car guy to help him out, maye it'll come back as a favor at a later date, maybe not, but it's just the right thing to do. A few years ago, a freind of my Dad's wife had died and he wanted to sell her '65 Mustang coupe (which he never drove, evidently) but first he had to replace the C4 trans, since it was missing a gear, and only shifting twice, no matter what he did. (some of you early Mustang guys already know the ending to this one) Anyway, he asked me if I knew anyone that had a good used C4, and since I did not, I said so, but I would keep my eyes open. A weel or so later, he talked to my Dad, who told him that he in fact had not one but TWO good C4 trannys and he was welcome to one of them. Since Jerry lived about 30 miles away, and we worked for the same company, my Dad sais he would put the "good" trans in the back of my truck, then Jerry could come by the shop I work and pick it up. So the next day I did just that. When Jerry walked into the shop later, he was kinda suspicious, I mean, why would I lie to him like that? Not only did I knowlingly lie to him about knowing anyone with a good (FREE even!) trans, it was my Dad even! How could I be such a bad person? Anyway, we walked out to my truck, which he had already parked alongside, and transferred the trans into his truck for him to take back to his shop. Now the truth was known, because the trans in question was inside a dirty, moss-covered trash bag, where it had sat stored for 20 years that I know of, under my Dad's porch. About an hour later the phone rang, once Jerry removed it from the bag, he found a corroded mess, and decided to drop the pan to inspect the innards, after all, you can't judge a book by it's cover. My coworker came to get me, he was laughing hysterically", It's Jerry on the phone, he says there was about two gallons of water inside that trans and wants to know if you want it back" I replaied, "hell no, a deal's a deal, it's now his problem. Besides, was is clean water inside? It's fine, just like my Dad told him"
    We laughed about that the rest of the night. A few days later, I told Jerry, that I was honest the first time, I knew Dad had those junk C4 trannies, but he specifically wanted a "good" C4 and true to my word, I didn't know anyone with a good one.
    This story has a happy ending, remember when I said the Mustangs trans only shifted twice? It's because it was one of those oddball "Cruise-o-matic" trans that you find occasionally. How did he find out? Because the owner's manual and the shift bezel clearly pointed it out.

    That wasn't an 80 Grand Prick was it ? :notnice: The wife had one, bought new in 1980. Same story, it was a lemon from day one. Slam the door and the radio would start blasting. Move the seat and the dome light would come on. You had to slam the door for it to turn off. Then the radio would come on :doh: She was driving it one day when the oil light came on. She ignored that. Then the motor froze up . Pulled engine. One journal had got so hot, it burned the oil residue completely off the rods on that journal. One rebuilder offered to rebuild it (after I couldn't find a short block) Then when I did get a reman S/B, two of the 12 pt flexplate bolt heads rounded off (in removing the flex) Went to the local Pontiac dealer for new bolts. While at the parts counter, one of their finest mechanics informed me that I only needed 4 of the 6 bolts to secure the flexplate. :stupid: Finally sold the car to my sister for $1000. She only paid $300 of that and stuck us with the rest. Of, yea forgot...........that 301 4 bbl was a powerhouse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT!........

    Nah, '94 with the Quad4 engine. Since it was a smaller car; the little hamster-wheel was more than enough engine to get a driver in trouble - as long as it was running right; which wasn't all that often after the first 3-1/2 years.
    3 (or was it 4?) coil packs, two starters - which bolted up under the intake :nonono: ; front struts 4 times, rears, twice; no clue how many sets of tires wore out on one side or the other (yes, I rotated regularly). Then the main harness fire.... after we got the quote on repairs, I let our comprehensive auto insurance foot that $2700 bill. Week later was the last set of front struts; 6 days after that was when the radiator side-tank cracked. Was gonna cost me $362 to have a replacement shipped from Ohio.... A blister-pack of 'fuel-tank epoxy' was $10 at Autozone; day-and-a-half later, Mrs StDr was driving her new Ram1500 and the Pontiac was in the dealer's back lot waiting for the "junker auction" truck.

    When my '91 Silverado started failing after 168,000+ HARD miles; I vowed "no more GM's"! :notnice: The '91 cost me about $300 in "hard parts" (1 A/C compressor, 1 starter) over the 15 years I had it. 'Wear items' were: 1 clutch overhaul (the only repair on that truck that I didn't do myself because of time/work commitments); 1 set of injectors; two sets of u-joints; 3 sets of brake shoes/pads; and 5 sets of tires. Considering the kind of towing/hauling I did with that truck, it was BY FAR the most reliable vehicle I ever owned; but that Pontiac ruined it for me.

    EDIT FOR ACCURACY: I did forget one recurring cost on the '91..... I'm a Ham radio operator; between the desrt summers and all the different transmitters stuck in that pickup over the years; I'd get maybe 2-1/2 years out of a battery. You do the math.

    Comparing the almighty Chevy truck that never really breaks down to a Pontiac that cost 400 for a fuel pump. I have owned several Chevy products and they all sucked with the exception of the S10 and the 2 Silverado's I had.

    Chevy put all of their Pride into their trucks. Mine has over 300K on it. It had all of the receipts with it. It had the trans rebuilt at 185K, radiator replaced at 235K, waterpump at 200K, and an alternator at 240K. Most of this I would consider fairly normal wear and tear. Belts Hoses and routine maintenance was all done at regular intervals.

    I had to replace a motor last winter. (I Finally figured out where the water leak was. It was out the side of the block. The guy I bought it from forgot to winterize it.) It needs some mechanical stuff but only a few things. Transfer case chain. Front axle seal, and a steering box. They are on the list after my 69 is done. Or when they get so bad I have to fix them.


    As for the 8" Rear end. I have on that I am asking for $100 for but I am not getting any lookers at all. I think the 8" is just one of those Items you can't give away unless the stars align in just the right position. Plus around here the 8.8's are going for about 75.00 and the conversion is not too hard to do.

    Sold mine for 100 bucks out of my 65. Apparently they are the same size needed for a 32 roadster.
