I am in the middle of a new water pump install on my '87 GT. In the process of removing the old one, I broke the two upper water pump bolts that go through the timing cover. I got a little lucky there, and it looks like I can just drill them out, retap the threads and put a couple new bolts in... if nothing else, I'll just stick two bolts through and put a couple nuts on the back side to hold the pump on.
Anyways though, my question is where can I find a water pump bolt kit? I called the local Ford dealership in this town and talked to the parts department and they said they sell each bolt individually and that they run anywhere from $5.50 to like $9.50 a bolt. That seemed a little up there in price. The newest Jeg's magazine I have has a listing for ARP timing cover and water pump bolt kits. They have 3 different ones and I am not sure which one to get.

They have cast iron, aluminum and stainless bolt kits for SB - Fords. So I am going to assume that they will work with any SB Ford motor.
Anyways, which should I go with?
Some of the part #'s are:
    070-154-1502 for cast iron
    070-154-1504 for aluminum
    070-454-1504 for stainless

    That is with Jegs.

    Thanks!

i was just in the same situation you are in. The dealership wants $10 a piece for the top 2 bolts, too rich for my blood, i said screw it and went to a nutt and bolt place, bought a 3 foot 5/16" - 18 bolt and cut it myself and used nutts on each end. worked great, well see how well it holds. i had to do this though cuz i needed the car fixed by the weekend and couldnt wait for parts. I have seen websites, i cant remember or find them right now, where you can get the whole kit for $15. ARP bolts are awesome though, cant go wrong with those, if you dont want the bolts to rust then get the stainless ones otherwise the cast iron ones are fine. make sure you use a punch on the bolt before you start drilling:)

I just can't see spending $10 a piece for two bolts and in reality I need a whole new set anyway because the rest of the bolts look just as bad as the two that broke.
I figured going with the ARP would be the way to go... but the kit won't have all the bolts I need??? Anyone know where I can get a complete kit so I can replace all of the bolts?

    Thanks!

:EDIT: Link isn't working. It's where I bought waterpump/timing cover bolts for my car. I'll try and dig up the receipt, see if it says anything

Most of the ARP kits are not made for the late model front cover, althought they will make them for you if you supply the dimensions.

I do remember seeing a company that offered a stainless steel kit for the late model cover (in the pic it looked like the heads had ARP on them ;) ), I'll see if I have the link saved at home. When you get into graded bolts over 6" they start to get expensive.

Clean the threads out really good after you drill and tap, and put anti seize on the new threads, most guys over tighten the bolts, they just need to be snugged.

    Thanks guys

Thanks for the help guys, I'll check out those web sites and see what I can find.
I can't wait to get it put back together again. I am up in Minnesota and it's been tore apart since fall. I don't drive it during the winter and it's been too cold to go back out in the garage and finish the project, but I've had the itch to hear it running again so I figured it was about time I go and finish the project and get her running again. :)

There is a company that was posted here or on the corral board about SS replacement bolt set. Something like $55.00 and looked just like the original units but in SS.

you can find SS engine bolt sets on Ebay for about $25-35. Do a search for Mustang bolts or something. Keep in mind that they will not have the threaded head to them, but you just line up the bracket and then install the bolt through the bracket, pump and into the cover.

See http://totallystainless.net/totally.html for the bolts. Last time I checked, they didn't have the studs. Nice folks, very into cars of all types. They have all kinds of stainless fasteners for almost every car. The prices are very reasonable, less the $8 for the water pump kit without the studs.

The studs are a Motormite item available at your local Advance Discount auto Parts store.

Motormite Water Pump Stud Kits for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars and trucks w/3.8L, 4.6L, 5.0L, 5.8L.
