Here we are, Ford Mustang fans…it’s mid-March, and on the eve of the 50 year mark of our favorite pony car. The time is finally here, and we’re here to offer up some official intel to appropriately mark the occasion. Both seaboards of the States will serve as kick-off points, with Charlotte Motor Speedway and Las Vegas Speedway holding honors, respectively. When’s this action all get started? We’re glad you asked–just about 30 days from now–on April 16th, 2014.
There is no doubt the upcoming Need for Speed movie is going to be a total thrill ride. Yeah, it might sound a little trite to say this, but seriously. The 50th Anniversary of the Ford Mustang. A gaming movie set to pay homage to amateur speed fetishes, chase scenes from Hollywood past, and let’s not forget–simply awesome sports & super cars. Did we mention the Mustang is making yet another silver screen appearance. Right. Got it.
It might come as a surprise to some, but to those following the overall 50th Anniversary of the Ford Mustang saga unfold all this time, it really isn’t that dramatic to bear witness to. What’s that, one might ask? It’s the attention to detail we are witnessing Ford pour into their latest rendition of the prized pony car on the eve of its half-century historical marker. The 2015 Mustang prototypes passed all around the proving grounds & test labs have been subjected to plenty of grueling procedures to ensure this is going to be one for the record books.
The more we hear and read about the 2015 Ford Mustang, the more we are simply excited to see the car up close & personal. Why? We’re pretty sure Ford’s drawn up all of the charts and pulled all the punches for this one. If you take a good look at the 2015 Mustang convertible, you’re going to have to agree that it’s a seriously polished piece. Why’s that? There’s just so much thought put into improved design–especially on the convertible. Where there used to be bare frames, there are snazzy headliners for the top frame and cover. There are also more supporting structure braces to help eliminate edginess. Cloth top material caps off the 2015 Mustang convertible, and what makes it the most special fact of all, is Ford offers just one convertible model in their entire portfolio.
That’s right–the next iteration of our favorite pony car will also hold some ragtop exclusivity with it. Now that’s clout you can take on a topless cruise with.
Will an instrument cluster swap work on my 2001 Cobra? Can I lower my car and not have to worry about caster camber adjustment my first time out on the road course? What is the original paint code for my 1986 LX ‘notch?
These are but a few of the questions we’ve all seen…plenty of times, posted in Ford Mustang forums all over the ‘net. This week, during our surfing for something else (isn’t that how it always goes???), we stumbled upon a cool technical resource for Mustang fans & readers, alike. It’s a Q&A column over at Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords, and it offers up solid tech advice, covering a myriad of topics of common interest to even the seasoned enthusiast. Head over there, and check out their latest installation!
It’s a well-known fact many folks from Philly bleed green, but there’s one Ford Mustang fan there in particular who took it a step just a bit further. Nikki Frost knew she was going to get a new Mustang in her future, so she set her sights on a 2013 Mustang GT of a special variety–one which a good friend of hers told her about. No, not some pink one from the Mary Kay reject aisle…nor was it the Grabber Blue (we’re huge fans of this one)…and nope, it wasn’t School Bus Yellow, either.
There’s nothing quite like that brand new roll of adhesive tape, straight from the cellophane wrapping, is there? That sweet, tangy aroma of the glue; the squeaky-clean backing…it all comes together, and suddenly, the world is your oyster, ready to be adhered together. You know what we’re talking about…
And when it comes to design concepts in the automobile world, coming up with sleek lines and edgy touches to any given car concept, guess what is commonly used in providing a base for the keystone of design? You got it–TAPE!
“Great design is about proportions,” explains Kemal Curic, Ford exterior design manager. “From the beginning, we need to focus on creating the right structural lines – the skeleton of the car. Then our job is to tailor the vehicle body to enhance the figure. This is a process of editing every single line to find the perfect balance of concave and convex angles. We achieve this on the clay model, and tape is what we use to decide which lines to move.”
So, with all the high-tech design capacity today’s technological world offers, Ford Mustang designers still relied upon a faithful stand-by to get the job done. Simply. Awesome.
“Tape gives us a defined line that is like a carpenter laying a level line on a building,” said Larry Pelowski, Ford master modeler, exterior design. “So when the designers put tape on the model, there is no question what their intent is.”
Just how important was tape to the design of the new 2015 Mustang? So significant such that the design team consumed enough bonding strips of magical adherence, it would result in a span of 155 miles if placed in linear fashion. Too cool!
We all know the drill, here. This is definitely one we’d love to add to our very own “Leno collection” if we had plenty of disposable income to simply throw about. Check out this 1983 Ford Mustang GLX 5.0 convertible, with a staggering 1,046 original miles.
Just…wow. From a private collection, maintained with care while stored, and very nearly museum-ready, this is definitely one you won’t see every day. Head over to the auction page to see more of this one.
Seriously. Pinball. Mustang. Do we really need to say much more here? We’re not sure about the ADHD gamer generation which is up & coming (maybe already here in droves?), but it’s one thing old-school game players will enjoy; and the StangNet team is totally stoked to see something like this come out.
A Chicago-based group, Stern Pinball, is going to create a brand new Ford Mustang themed pinball machine for sale to distributors and individual buyers, alike. And this isn’t just some run-of-the-mill gaming machine hack job, here, folks–it’s the real deal, licensed by Ford and will give total credence to the 50th Anniversary of the Ford Mustang, covering elements of its legendary past…and its promising next generation of design & excitement.

There isn’t much better than hitting the open road in a Ford Mustang. The only way, or maybe ways it could get better would be to join the ranks of an entire herd for the cruise…and to just happen upon a 50th Anniversary of the very car you’re driving. Sound like a cool adventure to take part in? It certainly does to us.
That’s what is going down this spring, on April 13th, 2014, in Norman OK, where the Mustang Club of America (MCA) is holding host to a national cruise to chart the way to Charlotte Motor Speedway or Las Vegas Motor Speedway, depending. It might sound odd to have two destinations, but actually, it’s the most logical way to get the entire country involved from a centerpoint, expanding out to the coastal regions, where festivities will be held to continue the marking of the Mustang 50th Anniversary.
