6.17 gears too much?

  • Sponsors (?)

I run 6.80's in my dirt car, but it's a 3 speed tranny and we start racing from a roll in the highest gear... We need the get up and go to come off the corner at a decent speed...

Drag racing? I don't think so, maybe in an automatic but it'd shift every second and top out before the 60' mark :)

Ok ther is this girl on cardomain with an 03 auto mach 1, and she wants to freekin put 6.17 gears in it.It will eventually have a cobra motor motor in it, and she wants it to be all race and not driven on the street, I think that is WAYYYYY to much gear but she keeps saying that her dad has like 30 years of racing or whatever and that he knows what he is doing. What do you guys think?Low gear would BASICALLY not even be usable LOL even with the high rev capabilitys of the cobra engine(6800?) My 66 rev limits at 7500RPM and man even with 3.80 gears it come up FAST, especially in low...I couldnt imagine 6.17s.

can we say high 30`s @ 50mph with .09 60 foot times....LOL

Wish I could have found this thread sooner. I would have liked to have asked her how many of those races her dad actually won over the last 30-years, giving her that kind of advice. :D

 3 years old!

Like Randy and Stan eluded to, that much gear is completely feasible and not all that uncommon amongst 1/8 mile racers. With a 33" tire, 1.0 trans ratio (C4), and 6500 rev limit, she would max out at 104 MPH, and does not include tire growth. So at about 105 MPH, she could run a strong 6.6xx 1/8 mile, or deep in the 10's in the 1/4.

Must have been a Dana 60 rear. I think they are the only ones that used the 6.17's.

Fuel cars (Top Fuel and Funny car) both use 3.20:1 rear end ratios. That's mandated by NHRA.

Well... I might as well post in this lol... A buddy of mine used 5.12's in his drag car. It was geared for 1000ft and he had a 438ci windsor in it and shifted around 8800.. also ran about a rather large tire, I wish I could remember what size they were.

Oh yeah...... This thread is 3 years old. :D

Exactly 1/8 mile ok...but I was in contact with her somewhat back in the day.

She specifically said the car was for 1/4 mile. Because I said the same thing...1/8 mile it will be sick...after that and your jacked.
But she just didnt listen...even ignored the MPH figures. And I also believe that class she runs in is limited to 26 or 28s out back. Im pretty sure a 33 wouldnt even fit on a new edge stang anywho.

I would be shocked if a ring gear for 6.17s actually fit in the case of a 8.8 in the first place.

6.14's for the 8.8

this thread is three years old. she may have another car now, hell she may be dead now. plus I am sure she has installed whatever gear she was planing to install by now..

:rlaugh:

i don't know why but this post made me laugh

i started reading this thread and seeing alot of people i've never seen post before, then i saw my cousin who doesn't post here anymore make a post, then i saw mustang92's post. then i drank some gin. then i realized what was going on, then i had another drink:shrug:

OK I was running the numbers for 1:1 final trans gear. So lets run 6.14:1 rear, 0.67 final trans gear, 6500 RPM,
26" rear tire, will run 122 MPH
28" rear tire, will run 131 MPH

Yea I guess she could hit 5th...but thats crazy. You loose tiome shifting anyways...but 5th would be even more. Its pretty tough to hit 5th fast...powershifting would take a master probably.

Im sure a built "cobra engine" would even pull MUCH past 6500RPMs haha. More like 7500-7800.

I started reading this thread and I miss alot of those guys from back in the day that don't post anymore. I don't think you should be allowed to leave stangnet. We should be like the mormons when people leave that religion. We should show up at their house and be like, "hey man, what's up? I think you should start posting on stangnet again. If you don't you'll go to hell and if you do, you can have many wives." Or something like that. Those mormons are on to something.
