V6 Tranny in V8

Can anyone confirm if the manual tranny of a 94 V6 is the same as the 94 V8? I have already swapped my engine to 5.0L on my 94 and left it auto. Now i can get a 5-speed from a V6 and am thinking of putting that in.

I was going to post this last night but couldn't find any stone cold facts. I thought the V6 transmission didn't hold as much torque as the V8 one, but like I said I'm having difficulty finding the facts out.

If torque rating isn't a problem then go for it, but if it is I would try and look around, or see if someone else says something.

The 3.8 bellhousing is not the same as the 5.0 bell, but the transmission is the same. The V-6 tranny has the same torque rating as the V-8. I ran one behind my 418 for a couple months with no problems.

ok actually my garage also told me it had a different bellhousing. So what i would need is a 5.0 bellhousing? does the year matter? I thought it had a chance because the 5.0L engine bolted straight to my V6 automatic tranny so i figured the bolt pattern would have to be the same on a v6 and v8 engine for it to have done that

Umm...I would find a new garage. The 3.8 shares the Small Block Ford bolt pattern on the bell housing.
This is why those who have done the 4r70w swaps have used V6 trannies, unless they used AODE housing.

Funny source, I know, but it's accurate(even on the 200ci I6 stuff).

I did not know this....Thanks for the info.

BlueBomber, you would a 94-95 bellhousing to go with a 94-95 transmission. I have one from my 5.0 that I might be willing to sell.

Wait now i'm confused... 66 coupe you are saying that the bellhousing is the same and so the tranny should fit right up right? I have a 95 original V6 that now has a V8 in it and the donor car is a 94 V6 3.8L. Will all parts fit up??

Yes. If you have the T5 out of the V6 it will bolt right up.

The V-6 and V-8 T5 transmissions are almost identical, including the fact that they both have the same gear ratios. The only difference, according to Tim, is the V-8’s gearsets are stronger than the V-6’s.

Check out the parts list at the bottom of the page. Note that Bellhousing is not listed. They used the V6 housing because the bolt pattern is the same.

to put the v6 manual tranny in your car you need a 94-95 v8 manual tranny bellhousing.

NO!!! This is only the case if the V6 T5 didn't come with a bellhousing at all.

ok so i hope you're right 66 coupe. So many weird answers tho that it's not very comforting. lol I'll try to research it further.

LOL...I can definately see the problem you're having trying to decide who to believe. I even did a search on Google and found a thread where someone told someone else that the bellhousing won't work. I guess it's a common assumption. I mean how many 5.0 owners have ever messed with a V6?

The only reason I've been able to compare is because I helped my old roommate swap a '98 3.8 into '94 Mustang, and my GT40P engine was sitting on a stand 3 feet away.

Here's more sources, just in case that article and Wikipedia weren't enough:

The bellhousing you want to use has "5.0" painted on it, but the 3.8 late model Mustang bellhousing will also fit.

Like I said, the bellhousing patterns being identical is common knowledge to those who have done or looked into the 4r70w swap:
http://www.lasotaracing.com/trannyswap.html
The 4R70Ws originally came on a lot of vehicles, but the best were the '99 and up Mustangs. The 4.6 Mustang tranny won't bolt up to a 5.0. However a V6 automatic transmission will bolt right up.

Yes i do believe you to be right. I mean... my V6 was bolted to my automatic and then the V8 bolted straight to it....meaning that the bolt pattern would have to be the same.
Would you know if the ECU would need to be changed or will it work anyways? Or can i burn my chip for it or something??

The V6 Bellhousing will mount up to the engine without a problem. The problem is when you put your starter on it will not touch the Flywheel. Reason being is because the V6 5spd cars use a 164 tooth flywheel while the V8's use a 157 tooth flywheel.. Now you could either find a 164 tooth flyweel with the right imbalance or get a 94-95 Stock Bellhousing.

I've done enough swaps I know the differences between almost every part from V6- V8

So if he bolted a V6 AODE onto the 5.0, what flexplate and starter is he running now? Is there no difference between a 5.0 flexplate and 3.8?

SorsCode has it right. The 3.8 is technically a "lopped-off" 302/5.0. So the bolt patterns are the same. The difference is in the flywheel diameter. (Good luck finding a 164 tooth/5.0 imbalance flywheel.) The 164 tooth fw was used in trucks, for the most part, because a larger diameter clutch could be fitted. You could prolly get one from a truck with the manual trans and the "post 1983 302" and use the 3.8 bell. It really would be simpler to get the bell from a 5.0l Mustang.

In this case just use the stock V8 Flexplate which is 164tooth.

94-95 5.0L 5spd: 157tooth Flywheel
94-95 5.0L Auto: 164tooth Flexplate
94-04 3.8L 5spd: 164tooth Flywheel
94-04 3.8L Auto: 164tooth Flexplate

As you see this is why you can mount a V6 Auto behind a V8 with no modifications but when you want to use a 3.8L Bellhousing you need a different flywheel. Because the 3.8L bell is made for a big flywheel than the GTs.
