Which direction is the right way to install resonators/glasspacks?...Seems obvious..

Which direction is the right way to install resonators/glasspacks?...Seems obvious.. I'm arguing with my friend over this, and I'm 99% sure I am right... if you take a cherry bomb, or any type of glass pack you see the little caves that are opened up all along inside the pipe, you install the pipe so the air gets caught in them and the sound is quited/resonated (slightly at least, lol). Am I right or wrong? Putting them the other way you are just getting a striaght piece of pipe that has no noise resonation or anything..wouldnt that be 100% pointless!?!??!?!?!

Honestly, I think most that are a straight-thru design, it doesn't matter what way you install them. The idea behind the resonator is an extra chamber to allow the resonance to disipate and the packing helps quiet down the sound.

you are correct, you want to install the mufflers with the perforated opening towards the engine. As you say without at least some of the exhaust tones entering into where the diffuser material is, there's no benfit. Most glass packs/straight through mufflers have a directional arrow.

what would you compare them to?

I'm bout to get some magnapacks put on. BUt i've heard several "muffler" delete systems on internet that sounded pretty good...at least through my computer speakers.

I'm considering getting a catted prochamber to deepen the tone, and add some voume to the sound. But first we'll see how the mufflers sound--i may just go with a catted x

THANKS, THATS HOW I INSTALLED THEM...IT ACTUALLY SOUNDS PRETTY GOOOD!

Honestly you'll find that the Magnapacks have a very deep tone with the stock mid pipe and cats. It also drones. I got rid of the stock mid pipe for a offroad x pipe and it made it sound much better, much louder though, but got rid of the drone. There is a little bit of trumpeting but it's a lot less annoying than the drone in my opinion. It was by far the best sounding exhaust set-up I've heard. The only reason I got rid of it is that when I added the new pulley and made 530 rwhp it was just way too loud. ~460 rwhp and it's pushing it as far as loudness. Bolt ons and it sounds amazing!!

I havent driven in a car with stingers so I am not sure how bad the drone is. If I had to guess the stingers and maganapcks will drone about the same. Both axlebacks sound similar. With a prochamber and hi-flows, my magnapacks did drone. It was not that bad. My flow 40series had more drone. Maybe a catted X with the magnapacks will drone less.

I bought BBK Tuned Equal Lenght headers, and an off road x-pipe...on the x-pipe I had 12" Cherry Bomb brand glasspacks/resonators, the old school cherry red ones that been around forever... I then had my exhaust guy cut the factory mufflers and install stainless steel 2 1/2" Inlet round canister style chrome mufflers (looks similar to the round borla and magnaflow mufflers) except I found the mufflers on EBAY through a seller with great feedback for only $140 for the pair including shipping.. so I ened up paying $210 for the 2 cherry bombs and two mufflers, and $150 to install it all... The car sounds amazing, especially when I get into boost..and the is NO DRONE like the MACS and Flows I had... This is what I was looking for.. I will get vids up this weekend of the sound.. I know no one will liek the choice of tips that I went with as far as the mufflers are concerned, they are 4", but they point downwards, I have seen this design on many super high horsepower Supras and import/euro cars, but it does keep the sound poited at the ground, and will reduce the carbon on the back of your car after a day of beating on it all day..and it did indeed work!! I'm very happy with the whole exhaust project, and the $$$ it saved and drone it got rid of was the real +!

I also can 100% tell you that above 5,000 rpms and till the rev-limiter this straight through design really lets the car breath and increase power greatly, especially compared to my previous headers, x-pipe and stock mufflers, and also better than the same setup w/ mac mufflers, and much better low-rpm sound and less drone!!

I know this has already been covered but with the resonators/glasspacks that have a cheese-grater look inside.....you want to install them so the exhaust flows against the grain...like you would if you were grating cheese:D.....

I have an old push-rod motor, so I know it sounds a bit different then y'alls motors but I am really liking the Cherry-Bomb glasspacks on mine. I am running Lt's, high flow-cats, true-dual 2.5" pipe into 28" glasspacks......it is much quieter then I thought it would be. I was very surprised but I love the sound. I dumped mine in front of the axle. sometime in the future I want to stuff another set of GP's in there with some tailpipes.I like it pretty quiet & I think I can achieve the sound I want by putting multiple gp's on it.

Yeah, I wish I had room for the big ones that U installed.... And yeah, I was surprised too at the actual normal driving sound..its not too loud at all when the exhaust gets cheese-grated untill you really get on it, then it sounds great.. I'm also @ 11lbs of boost too, so the sounds changes once the boost is up there..but overall I am waaay happier w/ what I made compared to all the diff setups I had bought in the year i've owned the car!!!! (And, that cheese grater was the best way to described it..lol)

Glad that worked for you UD! :nice:

393: The double glasspacks could quiet it down, could not. My experience is with no muffler and only single exhaust. One 18" gp about 20" downstream of the cat and then a 12" gp for the space where the muffler was. It actually made it louder, but that could be because it is a straight through pipe now and is 2" OD from the header all the way back. Even though it is louder the tone is definitely deeper(as I'm sure you noticed from your setup). So from my exp at least, a glasspack setup didn't quiet it down, but definitely enhanced the tone, which was what I was looking for :)

When I had SLP LM and added the resonators/glasspacks the car got a little quieter and the tone improved. Now I replaced the SLP LM with MACs. Now listening to other S197 with MACs in person, my set-up seems just as loud despite have resonators.
