More importantly when I removed the #2 spark plug, water pored out of the hole like it was a faucet. Ditto for #5, see people's Exhibit A and B below.

Before you tell me what sort of pin head I am for not checking this first even before buying this car, know this, I have a good to go 302 motor and a C4 transmission sitting in my garage. When I bought this car I was just looking for a roller, a chassy to drop my motor into, but since it came with one, why not toy with it a bit, know what I mean Vern?

Gregski.... I'd love to, But I fear I may be prosecuted for "Conspiring to Commit Eco-Terrorism"! All that Pond Scum, in those cylinders, is probably missing from some "Protected" Habitat. With the Current uprising of "Mother Earth", do you really think it wise, to deny her, something She was Obviously trying to re-claim? Looking out for your Best interests, I feel it my Sworn Duty, to advise you .... Let her have this one! Listen to Kenny Rogers as he sang it best...... "Ya gotta Know when to Fold em"......:D
 
Love your threads. Fix that engine. Ive seen worse cores breathe life (it may need a little machine work though if you are at all concerned about longevity). As far as mother nature go's, I love the outdoors and camp all the time.... however.... my neighbor drives a prius and the wife drives a 35 mpg economy car as well so I am using up the gas and pollution that they are saving. Greg.... make friends with someone with an eco friendly car for piece of mind like I did. :rlaugh:.... I even saw a sticker that said, "buy a hybrid... I need your gas", so I guess I am not alone in my feelings.... and..... when you get that thing running Ill ship ya a six pack of your choice. You will do fine!

Judging from how clean the valley and under the valve covers were, it looks like it might have had a rebuild shortly before it was parked in the lake. The resolution on my pc aint that great, but those look like pop up pistons. Looking forward to seeing how good the valves look. It appears you unstuck the exhaust valve. If you can save that boat anchor, you deserve a beer.:nice:

anyway I just had to know what engine I had, you know many of these 40 plus year old cars have been frankensteined over the years, so you really don't know what you got

I don't know about you but the only way to see the darn part number on the 289/302 block while inside the car is to remove the starter, sometimes I wonder why the Ford engineers just didn't stamp the block inside the crank case itself if they didn't want us to see it, jk

so removing the starter revealed the C6AE which any Ford Part Number night school graduate will confirm means it's a 1966 block, for those uninitiated, the C means 60's, D would mean 70's, and E would mean 80's the next digit, 6 means... [wait for it] SIX as in 66, but enough of the Ford Alphabet Soup for now

also I think if you get past the exterior and don't judge a book by it's cover you will agree that, the starter don't look half bad either, incredibly clean gear cavity if you ask me

Why don't I just remove the engine already? OK, cause I am one man, I work alone, and any weight I can take off that beast before I pull it out, if I am going to pull it out, is a PLUS people a plus. Yes I have a cherry picker, heck two of them for that matter, a red one and an orange one, (impressed?, jk)

And I am showing you what can be done with the engine in the car. This is not your aunts '06 Civic with a ton of plastic and no space in the engine bay. You can friggen stand in the engine bay with the exhaust manifolds removed. And the car makes a great engine test stand, heck you can even run the engine in it when the time comes, LOL...

There's always one

I've said it before and I'll say it again, now matter what you work on there will be that one bolt or screw or what ever fastener that just won't wanna come out. Well it happened to me again. When removing the heads, I believe there is 10 big bolts per head, and there's two heads so that makes it 20 big long bolts to remove. Well I removed 19 of them just fine, then I broke two 3/8 extensions trying to remove the last one.

Why am I using 3/8 ratchets to remove these bolts instead of 1/2 inch. Because that's all I got. Yes I own every imaginable Metric socket, extension, and ratchet, but after we went from Toyotas, Accuras, and Yamahas to Fords, Chevy's, and a Harley I have to tool up again. But don't cry for me Argentina, I am getting the right tools for the job, I just don't want to hide anything from you, so here are the pics of my stupidity and or bad luck.

No these are not Craftsman or any other name brand with a lifetime warranty these were some no name brand tools I could find in this garage, so the broken bits went right in the trash. Look it happens ok, par for the course!

Nothing Good Ever Happens At Home Depot

So I needed new wire brushes for the drill. So I went to Home Depot. I don't recall what happened next. I blacked out, all I know is I still need new wire brushes, LOL ! and they say men can't Multitask, paleaze, am I right fellas?

Secret Workshop Facility - SWF

Then under the cover of darkness the heads were transported to my Secret Workshop Facility commonly know as the SWF. Only then equiped with the least and cheapest tools possible could work begin. Don't let the strip of the hardboad fool you that is specifically designed for rebuilding small block Ford engines, jk.

OK, how pathetic am I, I don't even have a table to work on, that's right my kid took dibs on one of our fold out tables, and the wife claimed the other and you don't wanna see my workbench at this juncture. Figuring I get the garage to myself for a couple weekends I played along. For the record if we were to peek inside a book on how to rebuild cylinder heads I bet it would read "find a flat clean surface" and not "find a table to work on". Plus this way we keep OSHA off our backs in case we get sued by those vertically challenged if the table was too high. LOL.

TOOLS: Valve spring remover, electric drill with a wire brush attachment, and eye protection. Optional, handrolics, eyecrometer, and elbow grease.

Man These Things Are Stubborn

Man I have used this valve spring remover tool before to remove the valves out of my '83 Shovelhead and it worked great, but these darn heads are stubborn. I tried to go in order but some of these springs would not budge. If you look at them you can probably advise me if they are tougher performance type springs to go along with the high compression pistons, they seem to have a coil type thing wound inside of them.

Finally I got the number six exhaust valve out. Lesson learned: The exhaust valves are smaller than the intake valves. To me that's kind backwards and weird in my head, so I try to justify it by thinking this. The reason that the intake valves are bigger is because they let in two things, air and fuel, where as the exhaust valves only let out gas.

Now, don't say it, I know what you are going to say, so just let me live in my little fantasy world. I know that what comes out is actually different types of gases such as, nitrogen, carbon dioxide / monoxide, hydrocarbons, etc.

Note the to scale template drawn in AutoCad to help lay out the internals of the cylinder head, brilliant I tell you, brilliant. Look man, when you do this, have some fun with it, remember when you were a kid and you would sketch or draw the things you would dream about having, well why stop now, just draw or trace like I did, it's fun, and it embeds in your head and reinforces your learning. Do you see the pattern how it will go small valve, big valve, small valve, big valve, etc. How do you think the other side of the head goes, is it the identical patter or opposite? This stuff is intriguing, you just have to stop and appreciate the engineering.

Made in the USA

Well after hunting and pecking I got one valve out, then I tried to get another one out and guess what things went from bad to worse... I broke my valve spring compressor. Man I know what you are going to say: That's what I get for buying cheap tools right? Well, if you squint just right you may be able to make out Made in the USA on the top of the broken compressor.

So it was off to AutoZone and $27 bucks later I had a rental tool in my possession. I can use it and then return it and get my money back, cause that's how AZ rolls!
