Hello,

I have a 2010 Mustang in HP White that I purchased new. I was wondering if anyone else was having issues with "corrosion" and paint bubbling under the hood. This is my first really cool car and I love showing off the motor. I had the hood up actually cleaning the motor and I look up and see what I thought was rust. The dealer informed me that something apparently gets between the paint in the factory and causes this to happen.

It bothers me to see this happening to a car that is only a year and half old. The dealer informed me because I was over 36K miles that I would have to take it up with the Blue Oval.

Check your owner's manual and other paperwork. I believe paint/body/rust issues are covered under a different warranty (other than the 3 yr. / 36k miles). I would get it fixed as you might run into issues in the future. Take whatever avenues you need to. Good luck.

Hi 2010pony,

JKidd is correct, the corrosion warranty is different from the Bumper to Bumper warranty. Here are the terms of the corrosion warranty, so you can see if it applies to you. If it does, and you have been unable to resolve this at the dealer, please PM me with your VIN, contact info, mileage, and dealer so I can try to assist.

Corrosion Warranty covers body sheet metal panels against corrosion due to a defect in factory-supplied material or workmanship.

Corrosion coverage only applies if the corrosion causes perforation (holes) in body sheet metal panels. If corrosion does not cause perforation (holes), or is the result of usage and/or environmental conditions, corrosion warranty would not apply.

Rust caused by exposed sheet metal from accidents or normal wear and tear are not defects in material or workmanship. The paint on the vehicle is covered under the terms of the Bumper to Bumper Warranty.

Corrosion Warranty coverage begins at the Warranty Start Date and lasts for five years, regardless of miles driven.

The time, distance, and limitations of warranty coverage may vary depending upon the model year of the vehicle.

Hope this helps!

2010 Aluminum Oxidation issue

I spoke to Ford and they expressed real empathy on my issue, I have a case # opened and they are going to work to resolve the issue. The problem with the 3/36 Bumper to bumper according to the dealer is they will only fix the "affected areas"-I spoke to the service body guy and he said it will pop up in other areas as time goes by. The right way is to sand down the entire hood and respray and handed me a quote for $550 dollars. Yikes! The 5 Yr unlimited mileage is preforation warranty where the interpretation is "a hole" through the sheet metal. Stay tuned and we'll see what Ford does....I kinda feel like I want a new hood!

Aluminum Corrosion Mustang GT

The web is got this-
According to the TSB, “Some vehicles may exhibit a bubbling or blistering under the paint on aluminum body parts. This is due to iron contamination of the aluminum panel. . . . Ford’s Scientific Research Laboratory has performed a number of tests on vehicle body parts returned for corrosion related concerns. Testing has revealed that the aluminum corrosion was caused by iron particles working their way into the aluminum body part, prior to it being painted.”

CAS Executive Director Clarence Ditlow said:
“This is a very expensive defect to remedy. The TSB requires “extreme care to be taken” including special tools and segregated work areas to remove the corrosion by blasting, repriming and repainting. This repair is so difficult that CAS recommends the best fix is to replace the corroded part with a primed steel part and paint it. Ford cannot guarantee this repair will eliminate all the iron corrosion or prevent other areas from bubbling or blistering in the future.”

2010pony,

I'm glad to see you have a case opened which means they are actively working to keep you satisfied. You are correct that the 5 year corrosion warranty is for perforation. I will hope for a positive resolution for you. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance.

2010 Pony V6

Well I received a phone call with a resolution to my claim. Ford is standing by the fact that I have over the 36K miles on the automobile, and it is out of warranty. They are willing to kick in $400 dollars toward the $650 to strip my hood to metal, prime, and repaint it at the dealer.

I am very disappointed that FoMoCo wants me to kick in a nickel toward this repair, and are hiding behind the semantics of the warranty. As a manufacturer they recognize, on a global level, that there is iron contamination in the aluminum body panels on numerous models and this has been an issue(see my previous post). Truly mileage on this car (that is less than two years and garage kept) really means nothing! Corrosion is a time thing, and the oxidation under the hood started when she was new and on the lot. Only now 19 months later is it bubbling up under the paint.

I feel let down by ford's quality and will probably alter my plans of trading my HP white V6 for a GT/CS like I had planned. I flip through cars every 3-4 years and will just let the next owner deal with this as a used car. I honestly expected Ford to want to send me a new hood or something. The thought of the dealer sanding and grinding my paint makes me cringe....then the thought of having to drop 250 plus the sales taxes on whole 650 as well as a rental car for 3 days ...... just makes me upset.

Well, whatever your next car is may very well have the same issue, in addition to other problems inherent with that car. I'd pay 250, get it painted and sell it when you're ready. The dealer grinding and sanding on my hood wouldn't really bother me I don't think.

Had the same issue on my 2007 GT. It was also found bubbling at the bottom of the doors and trunk lid.

I traded it in for a 2011.

I noticed that Ford has changed the design of the door/trunk seams where the problem was before, as well as sealing the leading edge of the hood.

I think it's BS the way they handle these claims, and I'm sorry you have to deal with it. I was fully ready to keep paying on my car and keep it, but once rust starts to show up, it's dead to me.

Good luck.

My buddy is having this issue with his '06 too. You'd think after it being a problem for that many years, they would have changed the way the prepped/painted their hoods by now. :nonono:

Ironically, my ’06 F150 is made of the same material as his and hasn’t a single issue with the paint. Seems hit and miss?

Hello John,

I can understand your frustration with having your hood painted. I can see how upset you are, and I want you to feel confident in Ford's quality. Please PM me your VIN, contact info, mileage, and dealer, as well as your case reference number, so I can look into this for you.

Hi John,

I wanted to assure you that the offer you accepted, $400 towards the repair and a rental car for 3 days, would be your best option. There are no warranties or other coverages currently available where Ford Motor Company would provide additional assistance. I assure you the repairs will be completed professionally. Your dealer is Blue Oval Certified which means they have demonstrated a commitment to a high standard of Sales and Service customer satisfaction. I hope that eases your concern.

Natasha, It is nice to see a Rep from Ford keeping tab's on this board and addressing customer's concerns, good job. However I think in this case more should be done. I was a service writer for various ford and L/M dealers in the NYC area for 11 years. Now I left the industry 10 1/2 years ago so maybe things have changed, but at the time we were allowed to offer up to 2 PO5 after warranty repairs to customers in certain cases, this in my opinion is one of those cases. Based on the TSB this is a known concern, and clearly a factory defect. Yes the car is out of warranty so technically Ford doesn't have to anything, but it is out by mileage, the car is only a year and a half old. If it was a slipping transmission , or an oil leak, or something that could be attributed to usage it is one thing, but this type of problem has nothing to do with mileage, wear and tear, etc. This is factory paint defect,an acknowledged defect on a car that is 18 months old. This repair should be covered 100%. I don't know if the Op was really planning on trading to car in for a GT/CS or not, but is it good business to lose a customer for life over $250.00? Not to mention the fact that if he were to walk into small claims court with a copy of the TSB he has good chance of walking out with his $250.00+. As I said this repair can and should be done at no expense to the customer, and if I were the guy sitting behind the desk at the dealership when he walked in it would be.

Hi Svtpilot,

Thank you for the positive sentiment on having this board monitored. I understand your concern for 2010pony and his paint issue. The decision to offer repair assistance, as well as the decision of 2010pony to accept it, was not made lightly. Thank you for your feedback. I hope you have a great weekend.

2010 Aluminum Oxidation issue

I am not paying any money to fix Ford's manufacturing defect on my car. I never accepted the 400 contribution!!! I am waiting for FoMo Co to do the right thing. My next vehicle depends on thier decision!

This thread is a perfect example of why the Japanese were able to take such a large part of the US auto market from the US auto makers.

Ford is apparently willing to lose one customer and numerous other customers over 250 dollars!:(

There is something very wrong generally with American Corporate Management-and this is an example!

Yup .... I am going to trade her in after the summer and get something from another manufacturer - I was excited to finally own a pony.
I had a 1988 camaro who's paint failed at 58k miles and GM repainted the car at their expense and sent me a letter of apology.
I can ignore certain aspects on my mustang as wear and tear but the bubbling paint on a 2010 is just wrong
