^^ This ^^

This is what I have been thinking about today. Aside from the mountain of dust piling up on the engine, the fact that I chose to mount that ugly-assed EDIS-6 coil on my valve cover has always been a point of contention for me.

I decided that I was gonna change that.

That first required I place a phone call to Taylor wire to inquire as to whether or not I could get the wires I need w/ the EDIS coil sockets in a custom/longer length so I could relocate the damn coil pack in the first place. It got located on top of the valve cover because the wires that I bought weren't long enough to allow me to place it anywhere else ( or at least I thought I couldn't back then.........I don't even remember anymore). The phone call ascertained that I could in fact buy the wires in a semi-finished state w/ the EDIS sockets on one end made permanent, and the boot end customizable ( which is opposite if you've ever bought a trim-to-fit Taylor wire set before).
Dude said that I could name my length, and he'd make me 6 wires all that long, and I could cut them down as I saw fit for the bargain basement price of 85.95 before shipping, which is almost what I paid for the set that will now become scrap. Just for my information, I asked him just how long I could have them made, before there would be a drop in the wires ability to conduct the energy from the coil to the plug. He said 10' was the maximum.

10" eh? Maybe if I was putting the freakin' thing in the trunk.

I think I'll be OK, I'm only having him build me wires half that length.

The good thing here is that I'll be able to get that damn coil pack off the valve cover, and plug those 4 holes w/ some 1/4" rivet or something similar, and the coil will be free to roam wherever I see fit to relocate it to. I have a place set aside for right in front of the intake manifold between the radiator and it that I think will work fine, and I'll set about building the mount bracket to make that happen.

In other news,..... The mesh that I'm using as filler panel pieces is one of the items that I buy from my new found metal supplier here in town. It's a .060 thick piece of mild steel w/ .063 holes staggered .120 off center from each other.

I go to my guy last week to buy the cut piece I need that will act as the center for the newly fabbed console, and he says that he sold the last piece this morning.

DAMMITT!!!! When will you be getting more in? I asked. He says he wont.

DAMMITT!!!!!! But I need that stuff,.....Can you get any more? I asked additionally. He says Nope. Not unless I want to make a "minimum order" of 500.00 for him to order more in.

DAMMITT!!!!!! I only need this one small piece, 5.625" wide x 51" long. And I'm not paying 500.00 for that, that's for sure. Who do you think I could get it from elsewhere? Still searching. Have you tried McMaster Carr? I think they sell this stuff he replies.

I check with them and they do in fact have that mesh, but they wont cut it, and because I need 51", I have to buy a half sheet..........lengthwise. @ $148.00 before shipping.

No! said the finger.

I get online and find it. Online metals will cut to my size, but will only guarantee the cuts to be w/i .125" of ordered cut size.

DAMMITT!!!!!!!!!! What choice do I have?

I order the stuff and hope they're feeling accurate the day they cut my order. 35.00 for the piece, 16.00 to ship it. 51.00 for a piece of mild steel w/ a bagillion holes in it.
It arrives tomorrow. I guess we'll see then.

I'm loving the progress, Mike. I've been hibernating for a little while, so I haven't been browsing the forums much. I'm enjoying the interior progress just as much as everyone else here. I can see why you like the build portion of your projects so much. Every thing you do is a real head-scratcher, and I'm sure you smile when you see everything slowly come together.

Quick question. Could you have not ordered a piece slightly larger than what you needed and had it cut by your metal guy or by yourself and not have to worry about the .125" error factor?

I don't think so. The bagillion holes is the maximum number allowed by law and cutting a slightly larger piece would allow for a greater number of holes than a bagillion.

Well the piece shows up today. Packaged in a 6'long shipping tube, I open the thing up. No sooner than I do however, do i realize that I have ordered the hole size too small. I thought I needed a .063 hole, but evidently I was wrong. The holes on the dash mesh are bigger by probably .020, and now I got this piece of s hit that has a bagillion of these smaller holes. Additionally, they undercut it by .060.

The undercut isn't a problem really, as I'm cutom building the console and can accommodate any width really,......the damned smaller holes though,....FMTT.

Being that the console is stand alone, maybe a different size hole will be pleasing to the eye? A small variation to set it apart from the dash a little.

And if it helps at all, I bought a used plastic rocker for the mustang off Ebay and its wrong for my car. Sure looked the same in the pictures, but in real life is not the same texture as my old broken one. Well see how the return process goes.

What's the problem? Drill the holes out..

I think some variation could possibly work.

The way I figure it,....is if you get in your car and start right now, you'll be here by this evening. Then tomorrow bright and early, you will be able to help drill out what must be...... ( How many is it again @Noobz347 ,....A BAGILLION?) Then after several hours, and 13.5 worn out bits, you can get back in your car, and drive back all night, and you'll be home in time for dinner.

Now,........all sarcasm aside. How long could it take really? The holes are already "predrilled".
a .020 differential would drill through almost like instant with a really sharp bit. I'd bet a couple of hours tops.

Ok,.............and you though you were being a smart ass.

Haha.. well, yes, and no. Tape it up with masking tape and go to town. .020 in mild steel should take about 15 seconds a hole... that's only a gojillion seconds... 60 seconds per minute....

edit: wait, mild steel or stainless? That's a different calculation...

.

That's two of you for the "La Vida Loca" option, and see just how much crazy s hit I can get away with inside the car w/o it looking all Sanford and Son in there.. As I sit here drinking a cup of coffee, trying to decide what to accomplish, I think I'll do the rest of the console so I can determine just that. Whether or not the smaller holes clash, or whether or not Alan is gonna get in his car and drive 10 hours from Houston w/ his Dewalt are still TYD. The only way to find out I guess is to just do it.

Similarly, I did do what I do best apparently yesterday. I bought more junk. (It helps me convince myself that I'm actually working on the car, instead of just writing about working on the car.)

Summit sells paint for those of you that don't know. They sell Acrylic Urethane in both a SS, and a 2 stage version. Additionally, they sell the SS in a low VOC version as well.
I bought the satin black that will cover up the bars, and I bought some low VOC gold metallic for the mesh. It'll be here Monday. Not that that matters, nothing is ready for paint at this stage,...I just don't have anything left to buy for this car, so now I'm buying paint to go w/ the leather that is laying folded in the garage.

I swear, I was telling a guy last night when he asked what was the hold up from getting it running..................................it's time.

All I need is time.

How many of us WISH that that was all that stood between a $20,000.00 build, and getting in the car and driving? The entire freaking car is funded. and all I need is "time" to get it done.

About A BAGILLION hours worth.

.063 thick mild steel. Will drill in 5 secs per hole or less.

Well, Mike... looks like you're on yer own with drilling. Wifeypoo wont give me a yard pass... and I was so looking forward to that drive.

However, Iam well aware of the summit paint, in fact, we plan on spraying the very same SS satin black on my son's car. He really likes the rat rod paint look, so, Let me know what you think of it!:nice:

This will be the second time you've ditched me when I've asked for help. I can't believe that you let sch small things as wife, family and 600 miles sway you when it comes to helping a fell out.

I've already said this about that satin paint as it is what I used in my smoothed engine compartment, and the top half of the car when I actually attempt that.

The satin black is absolutely non-tolerant of imperfections. Any little wave/crease/dink shows up like a beacon after that paint flattens out. If not for the fact that I have completely covered every inch of that engine compartment up w/ engine and accessories, the little things that "bug me" about my paint job would be there staring me in the eye. I honestly wish that I had went w/ gloss black instead.
But all of that is water under the bridge now,...I'm on course and I ain't changing nothing.

Wow. And I thought nothing was worse than gloss black.. may have to reconsider..

edit: Wait, second time?? My apologies, I don't remember the first.. drive on down here and we'll knock it out...
