Fox Installing Maximum Motorsport 4-point Roll Bar + Low Slung Door Bars In My '91 Vert

I've got a '91 Mustang LX convertible with a Coyote swap and independent rear suspension. I want to move up from local autox to occasional HPDE track days with NASAne, and in order to participate, I need a proper 4-point roll bar.
So I ordered Maximum Motorsport's with the fixed harness bar + diagonal bar for added support & protection. MM also has a low slung door bar, but for hardtops only, convertibles can only get the standard high door bars. Low door bars would be better for me, I use my car regularly, so I ordered them just in case they could be tweaked.
I had Rob at Real Speed Automotive do the job, same place that did the Coyote swap and IRS.

Shipped everything to Real Speed Automotive

Stripped the interior

Rob welded support braces for added strength and support, rather than bolting the roll bar to the car.

The 4-point roll bar, harness bar & diagonal bar fit great.

Yes, the low slung bars did not fit properly in the vert. You couldn't close the doors. Sorry, I don't have any before pics, but above are after the bars have been slightly bent, and fit great

Underneath the car, Rob creates a bracket that is bolted the roll bar, and is welded directly to the MM full frame connectors.

After final fitment and tweaks, the roll bar is removed and sent out to be painted

Looks and fits great. It has proper function and safety.

After all that effort and expense, you should have the shoulder belts mounted by having them wrapped around the harness bar, not going over it and tied into the floor. Waaaaaaaay less stretch that way when push comes to crash.

The roll bar looks Great! Clean install:nice:

How are liking the IRS? I just bought one from a '99 Cobra. Hope to find time to install it in my vert in the next couple months.

Love the IRS. You will enjoy it, but be aware...'99 have a weaker version.

Yes, gonna do that. An issue was, the harness bar is to close to the seat to actually wrap the belts around. Stay tuned.

I have a 99' IRS in my hatch and love it.

@ReplayMan Your video of your IRS install was a great help. Thanks for that and also for this thread to show us how you're continuing to push your car to the extreme. Nice car!!

Sorry about resurrecting this zombie thread but if the OP is still around will you please give a little more info on the low bar interference with the doors? I would think that the 'vert and coupe/hatches/verts would all have the same dimensions in these areas. Curious where you had to bend the bar to get the clearance, by your elbow, further down? TIA!

That bar should be higher. It's supposed to pass between the drivers elbow and shoulder. Those bars are way too low.

I used a S & W 10 point roll bar kit in my convertible. The rear bars went to the frame at each side in the trunk welded to plates. The front bars came down through the notched speaker holes in the dash to the floor plate. The door bars were straight and went down to the floor at the front bars. That plate was reinforced to the frame rail under the floor. The bars at the b pillar were welded to a plate and that plate was welded on the bottom with bar stock to the suffrage connectors.

I think the OPs installer had a geometry issue because of where the OP wanted the door bars.

OP hasn’t been on the forum since 2017
Well then,...we can criticize w/o concern for hurting anybody’s feelings. ;)

I’ve never liked the look of a roll bar in a vert. If somebody just has to have a convertible, or just has to go racing, then I think they need a second car........with a steel roof.
The Diagonal bar seems wrong to me. Everyone of those things I’ve seen were always welded inside the main hoop from corner to corner, and intersect the mid bar.

There..time to insert the appropriate emoji now..
:dead:

Sickfox, yes the diagonal would be more effective if mounted higher like you suggest but the low bar design is for old people that don't want to climb over cage tubing in their "Sunday drive to the beach" car.

Toolow91, the link you provided is the same bar the OP used but they say specifically not for ragtops, I'm not opposed to massaging it in place but trying to get an idea of the definition of "massage".

CMA, anonymity makes people brave doesn't it? I like the look myself but don't care for the "light bar" or whatever they call the faux bar that many people put in. If you're going to do one at least get a little benefit from it. Yeah I'm still torn on all of the diagonal and cross bars but since my backseat has never been used for anything but a place to hold my CD case it's not a big issue for me. And yes, I do have a second car for racing; 66 mustang fully caged, 13" slicks front and rear and all kinds of noise, tire smoke, and fun whenever I hit the loud pedal!

Just noticed they show me as a new member! I may not be active but I've been a registered member since '11 IIRC!!! Insert indignant emojii here!

Oh,..Im far from anonymous. People know where I work, where I live, what car is mine ( which is even further from anonymous) and in a lot of instances where i’ll be at a given time with regard to a regional car event. If someone with a bowl of pissed in wheaties wanted to find me, and it was convenient for them to do so, they could.
And on that note, if somebody gets all bent up because I said I didn’t like the look of a roll bar in a vert, or that I thought the diag bar was installed incorrectly....They need to stop watching the WE channel.
