Hello everyone,

I have 2002 GT convertible

I recently swapped out the original motor with another 4.6 motor that's has 105,000 km on. I installed a new Mcloud street clutch and resurfaced the stock flywheel, new pilot and release bearing.

The problem I'm having is that the car hops, vibrates and you can here something is wrong with the driveline. This only happens in first gear and goes away as I accelerate. And the car gets going when the clutch pedal is almost all the way up?

I'm thinking the problem is the driveshaft. I didn't mark it because I saw a master spline on the driveshaft side and just assumed it's gonna only go one way. But when it came time to install it, I couldn't find the spline on the transmission side. But it just went it and I mounted the 4 bolts on the rear end.

So did the driveshaft had to be marked ?

I understand that the new clutch needs to break in but that is not the normal clutch chatter, I'm afraid to drive it. The new clutch doesn't even have like 5 km on it.

Thanks in advance to all.

IMO. IF the problem were a unbalanced drive shaft THEN the problem would get WORSE the higher the car's speed went. The fact it only happens is first gear is an interesting symptom.

Did you happen to remove the dog bone from the rear diff? Or do any other suspension work?

Does the problem occur if taking off Grand Mother style (higher RPM's with clutch slip) in 1st or 2nd gear?

No I did not remove anything else from the diff. And it dose vibrate less if you give it more gas when taking off ? Grand mother style). And I don't know if this would have anything to do with it but I still have not put on the front support or skid plate that protects the oil pan?

Driveshaft-Did you check the DS u-joints for grease and lack of movement? Did any of the caps fall off and possibly lose some needle bearings?
Clutch-So when you slowly engage the clutch it will start chattering, correct?

It's possible. You have a convertible...a New Edge convertible. Not exactly bastions of rigidity at the best of times, probably flopping around without that support. If you're talking about this:

then yes, put it back on and get back to us.

I have checked the u-joint and the caps, they are all good. I have checked to see if there is up and down play- it's all good. Yeah when you let off the clutch it starts to chatter, wheel hop, like you can feel it there's something with the drive line. And since this is a one piece driveshaft, it shouldn't really matter witch it goes in as long as the 4 bolts line up ?

There is a possibility of a high speed vibration I have read but never experienced it after 30-40 times replacing transmissions/driveshafts where it was not possible to duplicate the original set up. Yes I have replaced clutches and had to redo it again because of chatter, contamination misalignment etc Some clutches are real sensitive to adjustment too.

I still have to put the support on and just drive it and see. I have to drill two bolts out because they broke on removal on the support. Hopefully the support fixes the problem.

Have you checked the Motor mounts? The Mustang is bad about breaking motor mounts. One of the signs is the motor setting too low in the K-member.

Don't discount this as a possible problem source.

Motor mounts are good, I inspected them before putting them on. No cracks or tears.
I just have to drive it with the support. I think I just got I little worried but I need to drive for a bit and see
