Having A Mid-life Crisis!!!

As of Nov. 3rd last month, I'm 47yo. Married to a drop dead gorgeous gold digger (don't worry, married almost 25 years and she laughs when I call her that), and two beautiful teenage daughters who think Dad is an endless supply of Andrew Jackson's and unlimited data usage.
I work my whole life, growing up on a farm, then getting a job (at age 15) washing dishes at a restaurant, only to eventually become a Nuclear Engineer in the Navy, then a civilian Chief Boiler Engineer, yada, yada, yada... the same ol' analogous story of every blue collar, flannel shirt wearing, balding male. Like it's something to brag about. Well, at least I'm not a drug dealer.....
Then, one wonders... where has life gone? What have I missed? How the H.E. double hockey sticks did I get here? Why do I feel so worn out, and slow? Is it all that Evan Williams? I don't need Viagra yet, so what's the deal?
My house is paid off next year. The kid wants to go get a job. The wife has a new 2017 Subaru Legacy, and I'm stuck driving her old Toyota Corolla to work every day. Don't get me wrong, it's great on gas, and probably the best car I've ever owned. So good in fact, it's got 280,000 miles, and still runs like the day I bought it. Yet, when my daughter procures the old 'Yota for her daily duties of work and college, I feel like somethings missing. I also have an old '99 Suburban, but the old girl drinks gas like a 2-bit whore with a bottle of vodka. Even a new Coyote 5.0L does better than this thing.

I haven't made any leaps yet, since my thought process continues to wander about the black hole of male contemplation. One, wonders if my decision making abilities are morphing into the proverbial woman. God help me.

Here's the never ending problem. I'm an Engineer. A Tinker. I just can't leave things alone, no matter how supposedly perfect they might seem.

My first thought, was to get another Subaru Legacy like my wife has, only in a 6-cyl model, to satisfy my desire to go 0-60 in less than 3 days. Those boxers are nice engines... But, for a good $32k, I can't help but think there may be a childhood fantasy I can actually make come true. Perhaps in the form of a "base model"?

Hmmmmm...... we shall see.

I might also suggest the snuffle of some benzoylmethylecgonine from an unveiled ecdysiast's fundament?

That and a GT-350R. :D

Your wife sounds like the kind of gal that might enjoy both. :nice:

Welcome aboard :)

I don't know about the benzoylmethwhateverthatcrapis but I vote for the gt-350!
Just tell your wife how good she looks in it.

Actually, due to my unending desire to "mess with things", I'm thinking (based on my meager paycheck), a "base model GT" that I can essentially turn into anything I want.

You didn't settle for a 'base model' wife, why settle for a 'base model' car?
Oh, and welcome to stangnet
There is something about 'tinkering' with a base model, no quilt:nice:

It started off with a fancy label, but took years to produce a fine wine. ;)

When it comes to a Mustang, the paycheck simply doesn't allow for much more than a base model to get started. When I'm done, it'll be what I "want", not what some bean counter at corporate "thinks" I want.

I'm a little late to the party, but welcome to Stangnet.

If you want a tinkering car that can really smoke and is "value" minded. You need a fox body.

Just sayin'.........

I really like the new engineering in the 2018's. The standard suspension now incorporates a lot of what they had in the 2015 P-Pack. As far as an old fox body goes, I really want something newer as a daily driver that I can have some serious fun with, especially on the winding roads up here in PacNW.

LOL I had a mid life crisis a few weeks ago when I turned 62 and went out and got a white 2011 Mustang with black stripes and the v-6. My neighbors are shocked but those who have known me since my muscle car youth are not.

No it won't. If the bug bites you, you will kick yourself square in the ass for not buying a V8. I promise you. You will always want more.

Buy a base model... I'm all for it. Buy one with a Coyote motor. You can always boost it later.

Subjective portion:
S197 is still my favorite of the late models. I bet you could find a sweet deal on Shelby. If you're buying to drive, this to me is a better plan than a new car.

Go find yourself a leftover '17 V6 Mustang and tinker away. They're clearing them out for $19K in some spots. Make it your own with some wheels and anything else that looks good to you.

Or go the more expensive route (purchase + repairs + modifications) and look for an unmolested Fox to tinker with. The only Foxes I've seen that I would touch with a 10 foot pole are listed between $10K - $15K, some reaching over $20K and that's a lot of money for something built in the early 90s, so I just settled for something new with a warranty. It just depends on how much tinkering you're looking to do and how much you want your total investment to be. Just don't make the same mistake I made. I thought I wanted "practical" and "sensible" and was almost immediately miserable. Traded a 2017 Mazda CX-3 GT AWD for this Mustang, and am SO glad I did. I now have a car I really love, instead of having a car that I'm trying to love, but quickly learned to hate.

Your house is almost paid off. Your kid is almost grown. Treat yourself. Get something completely impractical.

My 47th was in July. My older teenage daughter is 21 and graduates from Villanova this year. The younger is the son who is 9. Substitute 2017 camry for the subie and 09 tacoma for the corolla and we are brothahs from anotha mutha. I agree with most... foxbody or ‘18 gt. I am building a foxbody and having a great time. My blue collar mid life crisis is completely awesome. Do something great for yourself. Good luck!

My wife keeps telling me that my new car is due a a mid life crisis...LOL...I'm 44 and also prior Navy. I found a good used 2016 for under $19,000 in Indiana. Have only had it for about 3 weeks, but it is a great car so far Good luck on your search!

I'm former navy also, worked with boilers and turbines too. My midlife crisis hit last year when my oldest and her kid finally moved out, so 2 days later I bought myself a empty nester present for myself. I got a grabber blue GT convertible with the PP, sticker was 48,100 Right now it's hibernating in the garage up on wheel dollies with a cover on it and plugged into a battery tender. I'm driving my winter beater for now a 2016 ford edge SEL AWD
