Progress Thread My centrifugal ppl, how’s this deal?

Just YouTube the balljoint installing tool. Its very easy, but recommend if you have one use an air compressor. Using a socket on it gets tiring quick. The biggest thing is just make sure the balljoint is going back into the control arm straight, and it will go right in.

What kind of balljoints did you buy? If they are OEM then you dont need to grease them, but if they are aftermarket then they should have included the grease fitting with it, so you can add a "little" grease to it. There is no need to pack the crap out of it.
I just picked up some Moog 94/95 ball joints off rockauto. So this may be dumb but I know our stock fox ones have the boot on them, the ones that came with mine that I ordered do I press the ball joint in then place the boot over it?

Got a question for you all. Decided what the heck while I have everything down and out in the front let’s update the suspension as well. So gonna swap out the struts and shocks! What are you guys running? Again this isn’t a track car or road racer, just a weekenderish car. I’ve been looking at the Koni str’s, the KYB AGXs, and the illuminas from tokicos. I also read somewhere about tokico blues? My problem currently is trying to get the nut off from the CC plates. It just keeps spinning with the strut. If you all recall I had the weird plate on top of what I think were Mac CC plates. I know those suck but they have worked for the last 13 years. How can I get them to loosen or do I just have to loosen the entire plate and pull the whole strut out attached?

The whole strut will not fit out the top. The best thing to do is use a big flat head screw driver to hold the strut still while you turn the nut with a wrench. The split in the strut shaft is for holding it still while loosening or tightening.

You could also just lock vise grips on the strut shaft. This is only a good idea on struts you plan on throwing away. The pliers will mess up the surface and could eat the seal out of the struts you're removing.

For your plans of the car I would go with just a normal set of strut/shocks like the Koni STR.T or the Tokico Blue's. There isn't a reason to go with an adjustable set since you will not be drag racing or road racing the car.

Where do you even find the blues? Also what are your opinions on the KYB AGXs? Just seen them for a good deal on rockauto.

I did some research and it doesn't seem they make them for our year anymore. I am not a fan personally on KYB strut/shocks as they seem to be a lower quality.

Gotcha then I’ll stay away from those. Found this set on eBay, seems reasonable. I’m guessing these would be in the same class as those Koni Str.t?

Ok guys need some help here for ideas. So I’m still trying to get my strut nut loose and it won’t budge. Tried to just loosen it normal and it spins. Dumped pb blaster on them and then tried a wrench with a big ass screw driver in the slot and nothing. Any ideas? I mean those tighten and loosen like a regular nut and bolt right, left loosens and right tightens?

Assuming you are not using an impact you have little options as they are extremely hard to get off without one. I know bc I have done it twice and it sucks.

You have two options:
  1. Use a pair of vice grips in the wheel well on the structure shaft and then use wrench to get the nut off. The may still try to spin on you which you may need to tighten the vice grips as much as you can. I use a rubber mallet and hit the wrench numerous times just like an impact gun to try and break it loose
  2. This option is if you have a Dremel tool or be careful a die grider with a cutoff wheel. You can cut the nut on the top of the strut in two places on opposite sides and then just is a screwdriver to pry the nut off if it doesn't already fall off
These options above are only if you are replacing the struts.

Would one of the electric impact guns from harbor possibly work? I’m tempted to go buy one. I know they probably aren’t as good as air impacts but I don’t have the room for tanks and what not in my garage.

I would spray it with some PB Blaster and then use a good impact. I have been impressed with the Earthquake XT from Harbor Freight. It will bust anything loose.
I looked at that one since they are having a big tent sale this weekend. It’s a little pricey, would any of their cheaper impacts be good enough to get this off.

I would think so. Should get those nuts off.

Try this first. Put the closed end of a box wrench on the nut, and then give the other end quick shark blows with another big wrench. It's sort of a poor mans inpact and works well sometimes.

Otherwise I'd say spend a few extra bucks on a good electric inpact or a pneumatic if you have a compressor. I went 20 years without impacts....I kick myself now

It seems to be the wave now, especially the electric ones. They seem easier and less clutter. I’ll give the wack method a shot, always scared I’m gonna mess up my fender or paint.

Oh couple of more questions. On my Moog ball joints should I or do I need to add grease? I watched a vid for the conversion and the guy added grease to his moogs basically till it was coming out of his boots. Mine don’t seem to have any excess grease coming out of them or anything. Also on my front dust shields, I ended up just buying those from lmr and they came with the rivets, how the heck do I get those in?

Get yourself a smallish compressor and a high torque impact, always need air for tires and other tools that will come in handy. Electric one nice but gotta make sure batteries charged all the time.
Grease them till hard and full of grease, don't over do and blow out boot and or seal.
