Best coil packs for a 96 mystic cobra

Hello everyone, I am a new proud owner of a 96 Mystic cobra and recently have had misfire issues in cylinder one. They replaced all the plugs and still have the issue and although I have unplugged the ground wire at the battery to reset the check engine light being on, The car still sputters and jolts wind mashing the gas upon initial throttle. When it gets into higher rpm’s it doesn’t seem to sputter as much so I’m thinking it’s probably the coil packs. Any help on choosing the best coil packs would be greatly appreciated.

Just wondering about the spark plug wires themselves. How's the condition of the spark plug wires?

Also wondering. Are any other cylinders misfiring? Why is this important? Because of the waste spark system used in a coil pack application a bad coil pack would cause a misfire in the paired cylinder. Which is why I would look first at things that might cause a misfire of a single misfire.

+1 on using Ford Motorcraft coil packs.
 
Well from what I’ve read and the symptoms that are happening with the car, it seems to sputter and jolt in the lower RPM range when giving it a significant amount of throttle and the symptoms seem to be pointing towards a coil. I haven’t Switched them yet to determine whether it is in fact a coil yet but I’m sure I’m going to end up replacing them anyway and was just kind of wondering which kind I should grab. Also from what I’ve read I should stick to the stock coils I guess. The wires seem to be in pretty good shape and considering the miles on the car which are just over 50,000, less than 50,100 to be More precise. But I agree with you and the wires could be a problem as well but was thinking about replacing the coils first just because of the symptoms that seem to be corresponding with what a bad coil will make the car do

Now I am not a mechanic, but I hang around a repair shop alot, although they only allow me to answer the phone and occasionally use a broom (supervised of course) and sometimes there is water/oil in the area where the spark plug/coil lives.
Will a scan not show the miss firing cylinder?

Yes I had it scanned and it’s miss firing in cylinder one. It’s the only cylinder misfiring as far as I can tell

Just wondering. Are you looking for help to justify repair by "part swapping" method of trouble shooting?

In your coil pack application a no cost option is to swap the coil packs side to side. Or buy a single coil.

FYIIW, I have had direct experience with trouble shooting a single cylinder misfire on my 1996 GT. In this particular case it did turn out to be a bad spark plug wire. Confirmed by swapping individual wires. Bottom line. It is possible for a spark plug wire to look fine but in fact be confirmed bad.

Or try this old racer's trick. Run the motor in a totally dark location. Look for the blue hue of escaping spark.

I haven’t gotten a chance to work on it yet for troubleshooting because it’s been snowing and cold here in Ohio lol but I plan on doing exactly what you’re talking about on both examples and I’m hoping it’s just a wire really. But I might just replace everything. Wires and both coils just to have all new stuff while I’m at it

Make sure coolant isn't leaking down into the cylinder or even oil (from bad gaskets, intake, or even thermostat housing).

Do you have a particular set of packs and wires you would recommend?
 
Consider that your 96 has how many miles? They're probably all original, have lasted this long, and even now is only 'suspect'.

I'd say that it's a pretty good indication of durability.

It’s more like a spark plug wire I mean. I’ve just changed all the plugs
