For 1985 cars that cost under 12k the mustang gt was a deal, and it was fast.
Were they a little flimsy, yeah, but it was what Ford fanatics needed.
And it threw fuel on a revolution. One that the mustang name was one of the leaders, not the fastest all the time, but it led the way in sales, top of the list in its price range and is the longest running automobile model to date. The mustang took over the drag strips, and the stop lights. Yeah it was not the fastest but it put the other american (and some foreign) auto makers on notice.
Is it a belly button, well not everybody has a mustang but everybody has a belly button so no it's not. It's just popular.
Now, keep in mind these links are from 1985 and 1987, just two examples from the long running pony market place.
The mustang remains THE most recognizable automobile in the world.
This and several other websites continue to prove the popularity and the other two american auto makers continue to chase the numbers. The mustang is not always in front but it has been in the race longer than any other. Period.

Emphasis on WERE fast*

Now they wont fall outta tree.

Am i doing this rite?
Yes.

A 2011 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T is faster than a 1985 Mustang GT stock-vs-stock.

If 4door Korean FWD sedans are faster than you, you're not fast anymore.

So many modern vehicles these days are faster than what a stock 80's 5.0 could do. I remember back in the late 90's and early 2000's a stock 302 was still one of the fastest cars on the road with competition only from an LS1 camaro or the new 03 Cobra.

Times sure have changed and left these cars in the dust. I'm sure a minivan could beat a mid 80's 302 in stock form.

Good thing we don't have to leave them stock.

The 2.2 Turbo Chrysler minivans could hang with them back in the day... Of course, everything Chrysler shoved that little bastard in was quick as hell for the 1980s.

#1 I ain't slow'n down on the coffee, Keurig is working on a intravenous coffee system
#2 the 1989 mustang was introduced with a few new colors, the 'batwing' mirrors for the vert and mass air for all, so no magazine was going to review them, the camaro was so anemic, heavy and the only V8 was the Z28 with, wait for it......wait for it... a wopping 170 hp!!! And it cost a bunch more too.
And the Dodge Boys didn't have :poo:, well, there was a program with turbo 4cyls that even shelby dabbled with but nobody cared.
#3 lets compare apples to apples, lets continue with the 1985 theme.
1985 300zx 0-60 7.2 sec, slightly heavier and cost more, a lot more, with a V6 and 220 hp it is the closest competition in america.
1985 toyota supra, I found that this one needed more research only because there are several versions, basically 16-18 k in price with 170hp and the best 0-60 time was 9.8 sec. A little lighter than the zx, I sure I could have found more accurate info but I'm making a point.
I chose these vehicles as they where the closest competition for the mustang market, I didn't spend a lot of time researching because the point I am making, to the one or two that are reading this is the 1985 mustang was stiff competition off the showroom floor.
Now for those that are going to compare 1985 (or pick your favorite fox body year) to newer cars, yes, even a prius is probably faster but it is not a fair comparison.
If you compare a mustang of any year, even the mustang ll, to their respective competition they are a force to be reckoned with.
So yeah, they were fast.

Stop comparing apples and bananas!
and how many 2011 sonata 2.0T are there on the road today compared to the 2011 gt? Or even a base mustang V6?

I can remember fondly a guy with a 2.2 minivan at New England Dragway running 11's with the thing. It was Chrylser tan as well!
I can remember a Oldsmobile long roof with a 455 in it ruling the super stock class for several years.
I was unbeaten on the street with a 1000cc Kawasaki in the late 70's but I did not stand a chance against 600cc bike today, again, apples and bananas.

When I first got my 89 gt on the road I got spanked by a turbo neon. I think it was the first year for that SRT (or whatever SRT4 maybe  ) now that was embarrassing!!

1. Apples to oranges... that's my point, a "non" performance car from 2011 is as fast as a "performance" car from 1985... and that's racist, all Asians don't look alike.
2. Probably a lot, the 2011 Sonata outsold the hell out of the 2011 Mustang (damn near 4:1), and is less likely to end up wrapped around trees, telephone poles, and concrete dividers leaving cars-n-coffee events.

General, I agree 100% with your thoughts, well said.

You cant compare a vehicle made today with a stock foxbody stang. Ok to further the thought, my stock 87 GT would spank the living heck out of a Model T Ford. Same thought proccess.

For the time period, the 85 GT was fast.

Oh, and stock foxbody stangs can still hold their own. I was merging onto I83 South a few weeks back doing about 35-40 in 2nd gear while checking if it was safe to merge onto the interstate. You know, people today don't understand what yield means....but I digress....

Some idioit in a new hyundai suv was all over my rear and decided he was going to cut over the rumble strips and beat me out onto the highway and cut me off.

I was going to wind out 2nd gear anyway and when I saw that idioit do that, it pissed me off. The road was clear to the left and ahead by that time...so I stomped on the skinny pedal. 225 old school, fuel injected, American pushrod V8, Dearborn horses came to life. The sweet sound of a roller cam 302 Ford in the upper rpm range filled the cabin...and I was 25yrs old again..

I wound out 2nd and 3rd to about 4800 rpm and part of 4th. By that point the speedo was well buried. I looked in my rear view mirror and that foreign junk was at least 10 car lengths back, if not more.

Maybe he tried, maybe not, but the old 5.0 held her own...and gave me a flashback to my 20s....and yes, to me...(I am old...), she's still fast. :nice::flag:
