Best Intake for my Combo?

I have an original Cobra intake, not one of the Chinese ones, on mine. It supports my 500hp car just fine. Vortech V3, Edelbrock Performer heads, B303 cam.

No issues. Actually had it sanded smooth and powder coated a color called “near chrome” or “almost chrome” I think. Had the TB opening port matched to my throttle body at the same time as I believe the opening is 65mm and my Accufab TB is 70mm. Ordered a new cobra upper plenum plaque as mine was destroyed when they were preparing it for powder coat. Damn thing was $50, and that was years ago. But it really topped off the intake nicely.
 
Well fellas based on what I am getting so far I am leaning heavily toward a tmoss ported lower cobra intake for my application. I really like keeping a car close to stock appearance and that cobra intake on top under the hood looks great to me. I have a dyno sheet on my current setup. I will try and find a way to contact Tmoss and when it is all done I will have another dyno done and we will see what we got. I appreciate all of your input!

1. Type the @ then tmoss. It will pop up his used name and tag him (or his son.)
2. Use the envelope in the blue bar to send him a PM.
3. Use the email at the bottom of the page that has all of his tech links on it.
4. Ask if someone has current info on them
As a last resort.
Pack the lower manifold with lots of solid foam and packing peanuts after putting it in a heavy, clear bag.

Just to add on to what I said earlier. I found the video I was talking about. I’ll spare you from watching all 30 mins.


Long story short. AL headed 302 with a GT40 intake vs system max. Just like I mentioned earlier. The long runner intakes make more power down low, but at 4750 they switch and the Holley takes off.

Gt40 in blue, Holley in red. Gt40 just runs out of steam around 5k rpm

Just for giggles. AL headed 302 with stock HO intake and edelbrock intake. As you can see, the HO intake even outperforms (not by much) the RPM II at low rpm, although the crossover point is much lower at 4000 rpm

Nice graphs, Mike. I remember that being the consensus from the mags back in the day, too. Me personally? I'd leave the Cobra Intake on it. I like the look... and after all, it is a Cobra.

I prefer the looks of the Cobra as well. Given that for my needs I know i'd be doing a lot of 2000-4000RPM pulls on the mean streets, I opted to stick with the cobra intake on my TFS170/Custom cam combo, although I did port the cobra (TMOSS did the porting).

I'd imagine if i swapped to a Trick Flow intake i would see a difference in power like the top graph, with the trick flow taking off somewhere around 4500-5000RPM and giving more peak power. That's a 25HP difference in that graph but all of that power would be at an RPM that I would rarely use on the street. I'm sure an extra 25HP at 5500 RPM would be fun as hell though

Of course, you can always compensate for the reduced lower end power of an aftermarket intake with 4.10's until you get that engine wound up.

Did the article/video run the Edelbrock RPM intake? Any other product with this name is a safe choice for a wide and useable power band. Engine Masters on MT ran the episode that tested carbed, dual plane intakes with an AL headed 351 again this morning.

I would like to also see what the ported lower GT-40 family intakes would have done in the same test.
 
GT40 family intake dyno tests

To sum it up:

1-2 HP differences between GT40 tubular and 93 cobra. 94-95 cobra was 5-6 HP less and explorer intake was down about 10HP from the GT40/93cobra. I know some publications out there claim there is no difference between the family, but i've seen enough evidence to convince me that the explorer upper will cost you a few ponies as compared to the tubular/93 upper.

All were run on an unported lower manifold. SOme of the comments asked for doing it with a Tmoss/Bigdogs ported lower. Richard has some other videos wherre he compares the GT40 family intake to aftermarket. The aftermarket intake makes more power, but at higher RPM (over 4500RPM or so) while the GT40 family intake made more power at lower RPM. So really selecting between the two comes down to if you want higher PEAK power at higher RPM (great for racing) or more power at a lower RPM (great for street driven cars).

I have Seen a lot of banter between big dogs and t moss . I wonder what the reality is. Miss’s have done it forever . He did my systemax for me .

I know. I followed a lot of that banter from the sidelines and have kept out of it. It's spilled over to FB and YouTube as well. I would truely love to see a dyno test between a Bigdog ported Cobra and a tmoss Cobra on the same engine just to compare the dyno curves.

I think one guy offered to do it on Corral a month or so ago, but don't know if that ever became a reality.

I have never heard of Bigdog. How do I contact them? If I get them to do mine it could likely be available in the future to test against one of the many Tmoss ported GT40 intakes. That would be some good data! I feel like either party that has made a name for themselves on these mustang platforms probably knows what they are doing though and I wouldn't expect one to dramatically outperform the other. Here is a Dyno sheet with my current setup.
