Engine Noise

See if any of you guys have experienced this...

On acceleration, there is a ticking/rattle that sounds like it is coming from the left side of the engine compartment on acceleration. This is upon any acceleration, fast or slow. It is most noticable on hard acceleration, and at speed in 5th gear when you lay on the throttle. It's definately not detonation. I have driven a couple of other used Mustangs, and some have this sound, and some don't.

Any ideas?

Me too!

My 04 GT auto has a ticking noise too under hard acceleration. It sounds like it's coming from under the left side of the steering column. It almost sounds like someone drinking an almost empty bottle with a straw. You know, when you get to the end and your parents tell you to stop doing that. That sound, but more regular. Not random.

I plan on driving other 04 GTs on the lot just to see if it is just mine. I guess other people have it too -- assuming we're hearing the same thing.

I wish I knew what it was though.

Thats it! The sucking straw sound...Anybody else out there experience this?

The sound is always there. Some of the cars I have driven have the same issue, but others don't. To be honest, since I first noticed it, it's become a real source of irritation. Will probably take it to the dealer, and let you know what comes of it.

I have it too. I also had detonation, but I since went to 89 oct. and got rid of the pinging. I still here that faint sound you guys are describing. I just figured I still had some detonation??? Can anyone explain this?

I've got an 03 that does the same thing. Ford said there is nothing wrong after several trips to the dealer and the Ford area rep. The general feeling is this is the fuel injectors pulsing under acceleration. Some feel it may be the defective heads but you decide after you read thr article below. Since it's under warranty for another 2 years I'll keep a close watch on it. I would take it in and have them write a service ticket on it for the record so after the warranty expires you have something to battle about if things go wrong.

I have the same ticking sound with my 2002 GT, I have made several trips to the dealership and each time they assure me its just "normal" valve train noise. Personnaly I dont like the answer, but since I'm going to replace cams and cam followers(going to add roller followers) down the road I'm not too concerned. The ticking is so slight that even if its turely bad valves or something its not going to fail anytime soon.

Most noticable when I'm in the drive thru and you can hear the engine ticking, because the drive thru wall is on your left it seems to make the sound more noticable. tic tic tic.....drives me nuts. But hay thats what the loud exhuast and the stereo are for :)

Dont sweat it....if you drop a valve...tear both sides down and do it right :) should be able to have the heads ported and polished and new Crane street cams, with new followers for say $2500. Thats my plan

here are the improved followers from Second Street.
they actually have locking nuts to tighten up the valve lash.
