Its been a while since i have had time to mess around on my mustang, not to sure if anyone even remembers my project but here is an update nonetheless. In november i bought a 99 cobra irs unit and i have since fitted that up under the old convertible. What i think is the coolest is that i think this mustang will possibly be the worlds only 67 convertible with a fastback hardtop. these are just rough in pictures i havent built the frame that the top will sit on yet.

I think it's an abomination and you should be shot!!

Juuuust kidding. I'm kidding! :D

No, sounds like a fun project. Seems like a real challenge to get the fastback to come on and off and the car to look good in both configurations.

Where did the door handle come from? Looks really different.

Nice idea, and it's looking good. What I can't imagine is how much that hardtop is gonna weigh!

I was also worried about that too, but i am almost positve that when it is finished it will weigh less than 100 pounds, it might weigh 40-50 pounds right now, but of couse the weight isnt that much of a problem, its how cumbersome it is to handle :rlaugh:

the door handles are off a 2002 ford focus (suprisingly this was a relatively simple mod to do)

Are those 97GT wheels you have?
yes i think they are, i got them at a local junkyard for 100 bucks with tires. Two of them are slightly warped, but it doesnt matter much they are only for mock up.

Sweet idea! Have you estimated the weight of the glass as well?

i am going to use plexiglass since it will be taken on and off, just so it doesnt get broken and the rear glass isnt cheap.

Also, you aren't going to be able to open the trunk with that cover on are you?
i thought about trying to do that but it would be really complicated so im just gonna pass, the only time it would bite me on the ass is if i ever had a flat :notnice:

Yeh I was thinking you MAY be ok if you hadn't already welded that bit over, to leave the trunklid section of the fasback off, so the trunk can open. There'd be like a dipped scolop section on top of the trunk lid though. It would look a little wierd though.

Even though it is a cool idea. I would have rather kept the original vert look.

I see you already bought the wheels.

What I do need to know what kind of side vents are those?

How low did you manage to get the rear sit?

With the DVS kit I would have had to send in the main brace to have been modified to lower the rear.

hey vert, long time. how is the rest of the project going? details man, we need details :D i've made a little progress on mine

more pics to come as they get the rest of it put back together.

yours is looking pretty good as well, i have an idea for the fastback roof that would allow you to use the trunk, if you haven't already thought of it. you could do the rear glass similar to the 68-70 chargers with the big "fins" from the roof to the end of the quarter panels and big concave glass area. i think it would look really sharp like that and from the sides it would still have that classic fastback look

thats one hell of a project you've got going there. arent you the guy also doing a DOHC 4.6 swap and the full interior out of a lincoln mark VIII? or am i thinking of someone else....either way, looks good. :nice:

yes that is me :D im not going to be using the lincoln interior anymore. im not to sure what the interior is going to be at this time

the original vert look will also be there this is only a hardtop and will be removable. Im planning on using the latches from a c4 corvette that are on the back of the top frame and are resessed in the top cover, if you are familiar with corvettes you know what i am talking about. yes i bought some wheels but i dont think i am going to be using them they are boss 304's i love the look of them but they just look a little to bling bling. the side scoups are from 65/66 shelby that were moulded into the fender. the rear is going to be really low. DVS kinda pissed me off so i modified the rear irs frame to match up to the 67 frame rails (i only have about $80 dollars in the mod so far).

i may work on making it so you dont have to take the top off to get into the trunk. It will all depend on how the final fit up looks, and how much fab work would go into making the fastback a "hatchback"
