Anyone considered modding a new Mustang GT verses getting a GT500?

Would you consider a new Mustang GT verses a GT500?

Speculating, the GT500 may cost approximately $15-20k out the door over what a new Mustang GT costs. Throw some of that savings into a SC and other mods and you still get quite a nice new performing car. Yes the GT500 will be the king of the hill but not everyone can turn over a new car plus mods everytime the king of the hill is replaced. That's why I still have a 99 Cobra verses newer, so I can have my other two vehicles also and not drive the Cobra daily.

I doubt any one in this particular forum would choose a modded GT over a Cobra/GT500.

I'd keep my current Cobra before I'd down grade to an 05 GT.

I think that would be everyone's first instinct to think that, however when you get people like me that are Mustang enthusiasts and have been driving Mustangs for 25 years of all models ranging from 4, 6, and 8 cylinders you may find that there are more folks that wouldnt have a huge problem with it if cost was a factor. Afterall, a Mustang GT is still a Mustang and has always been one of the best bangs for the buck throughout all the years and the 05+ will give any stock pre-03 Cobra a good run. So my logic is what is more important, better technology or the need to have SVT on the bumper? Sure I'll be in line for the GT500 but if I had to go with a GT my ego wouldnt be hurt at all and I would be just as happy knowing I could mod it to my liking. Of course dont take this the wrong way, this is only my opinion like yours.

Well, I had a $55,000 dollar mustang GT and traded it in for a Cobra.

A Cobra will always be the king of the year it was made and thus holds it's place. A gt is always a gt. This has all been said before and is quite pointless.

SVT on the bumper designates the very best Ford offered that year in the Mustang line. Comparing a seven year old Cobra to a new GT is stupid. And bolting a ***** load of parts into a GT does not capture the magic of factory muscle. I can vouch for that.

None of this is an attack on the GT which I think is a fine car and would be proud to own. However on the subject..... Cobra >>>>>>>> Modded GT.

You also have to remember you can throw a sc on a new Mustang GT and have a powerful car, but think about the price at that point. New GT aprox. $30K, blower $5K, supporting mods and tune $2k. At this point you are into it for a decent buck not to mention how long is it going to last with those stock internals? The GT 500's price is not known at this point so let's say $40K with a markup of $5K. For that price you get a monster out of the box and with the normal bolt-on's you we be seeing over 500 rwhp before a pulley swap more than likely. :hail2: Comes down to the almighty $ again and how much power is enough. ( is it really ever enough :nonono: )

I'm sorry you feel my question is stupid. I guess I am missing the point you are obviously so defensive about that has no real bearing on my original and simple question.

If you could not afford a GT500 would you consider a Mustang GT?

I think if you owned a pre-03 Cobra that is getting up there in mileage, years, maintenance, etc you would be more open to the options available verses holding onto the "SVT" symbol regardless. There is a ton of pre-03 Cobra owners that have been waiting patiently many years for the next generation Cobra, or something that is better than what they have now. For instance I could afford to pay up to $70k for a GT500 but responsibly I will only pay up to $45k and then I will look elsewhere. The next best thing would be a Mustang GT. Sure I could keep my 99 Cobra and be an old “king of the hill” with the SVT badge but that is not important to me. Getting a new chassis, a new motor and all new technology with a warranty and a fresh foundation to build on is important to me. So as much as I have loved my 99 Cobra, it would be replaced with a new Mustang GT if that were my only option unless I could afford to have both. I don’t think there is anything stupid about that.

I agree with you, when the time comes the final price of the GT500 will be the deciding factor. Soemthing to consider is when the GT500 rolls out the market will be flooded with GT's and the market adjustment should be minimal if at all, thus lowering the out the door price.

This is not your original question, you left a very important word out, MOD. But I do not want to argue so I will try to get my point across which you did not get the first time.

Yes I would, I wouldn't ruin it with by chasing the HP #'s of the Cobra however.

And your original question was not stupid and I apologize if I made it sound like I thought it was.

What I was trying to say was, an 05 GT may outperform a 97 Cobra, but that does not mean everyone should trade in there 97 Cobra's for an 05 GT.

A 97 Cobra (whatever year for that matter) is a special car for the year it was made (like a GTO judge compared to a regular GTO compared to a Tempest and so on and so on) and some people appreciate that, some people don't and go for the newest and bestest. Whatever floats you is OK with me but I still would do one of two things if I wanted the new body style

1) Buy a GT and do very little to it in the performance dept. just personalize the looks in the name of driveability.
-or-
2) Buy a GT500.

I would not chase the GT500 with a GT, it is a waste of time and money.
