fuel Filter question

I'm thinking about changing Fuel filter this comming weekend.
i'm getting special tool to remove clip and such, but got thinking.


How do u releave the fuel pressure? should I start car with fuel pump fuse out and let it die?

meh, just put some paper towles down & just take it off. some gas comes out but not that much

If you have a schrader valve, use it. If not, pull the fuse and let it die. The newer cars don't hav valves and have to do it that way.

Just did mine this past weekend and followed the instructions from the bullitarchive link. I just pulled the line without relieving pressure and enough gas ran down my arm for me to put the line back on and then use the shrader valve. I spent more time putting the car on ramps then I did anything else, the job is quick and simple.

The easiest method to relieve the pressue is to just let the car sit overnight and change the filter in the morning. The pressure will bleed off overnight. This is how I do it and have never had an issue.

Yup. Much easier. I do this on my Mustang and my Ranger.

Hmmm, I was having a hard time getting the hoses off of my 2000 GT when I came upon this thread. The spring release tool did the trick, but I don't think 2000 GT's are supposed to have hard lines going to the filter with spring release mechanisms like mine has. The link would seem to indicate that they are normal on a Bullitt, but my manual and another tech I spoke with both indicate that this set-up should not exist on a 2000 GT. Can anyone solve the mystery? Thanks, G

My 2001 was built in October of 2000 and it has the spring release type safety connections. Here is an image from www.alldata.com on the 2000 GT fuel filter, looks like it shows them.

I don't see how that diagram has anything to do with a fuel filter but thanks for the response. So did Ford switch to hard lines and spring locks in late 2000? It would seem odd for them to switch midway through the line rather than just making the switch for the 2001 line. Do the 2001 GT's all have these features then? Maybe I have a 2000 GT built late in the year and it received the upgrade early. The 2000 repair manual I have doesn't indicate the possibilty of these features. Any more input from anyone?

u don't need a special tool for one. just use a flat head screw driver. and two, I wouldn't worry bout bleeding the system off. just pup the locks off with the screw driver and go. should take 5-10 min max.

No, use a spring lock removal tool and do it properly... The spring lock release tool is VERY cheap so why not get one and use it? Flathead screwdriver...

Here is a good set from Sears for $9.99 that will work on both AC and Fuel lines. You can get a much cheaper set at just about any auto parts store that will work just as well.
