i was reading a thread 2 down from me. a guy is in a very similar situation to me. i just got a 2000 gt, im looking to go for a cobra.

i dont feel like modding up a gt which will just kill me later on in re-sale and be a waste of money/run into complications. id assume get a cobra or leave my gt alone. right now its got low miles, and nothing is wrong with it. i just want more power.

with that said, im wondering what your insurance rates have gone from with a gt to say the cobra? i am 18 years old, it wont be in my name. right now, i pay 130 a month and the gt has full coverage. im expecting 250ish a month, is that about right or am i off?

the other issue i was worried about with a cobra is finding one that hasn't been beaten to death. any tips? i know to listen to the "tick", i dont want a modified car. i wont be modifying it myself most likely either.

thanks

My insurance payments stayed the same when I went from full coverage on an '02GT to an '03 Cobra. Then again I'm old, married, own a home, and have outstanding credit which all makes a huge difference when it comes to insurance premiums.

Your best bet would be to call your current insurance agent and just ask them to run the numbers substituting a Mustang Cobra for the GT. Shouldn't take them more than 30 seconds to quote you a price based on your current data.

I have a 02 GT that I spent about 10 grand on between a procharger, wheels, tires, exhaust, lowered, gears....ext. and after I was all done it just wasnt' fast enough...It went 12.2s at 113 but I wanted more..

So I picked up a 04 cobra and put a whipple supercharger on it and man I dont even like to drive my GT any more. Puts down 600 to the wheels and is alot of fun to drive. Dont waste your $ modding you GT...save up and get the cobra..IT will be worth it in the long run.

thanks, that is what im going to try out.

i had tried to steer away from asking them because they are weird about giving quotes. last two times i asked when i was car shopping, they took 4 days and acted weird, no idea why. it will definately be my most accurate answer though, i was just hoping someone had a rough guess. im expecting a 50% increase.

i did do some experimental testing. my moms info only, 6 month rate= 485. add me as a secondary driver to the car, no other changes, 6 month rate= 2600 :nonono:

yep, that was with high deductables, low insurance coverages, ect.

the good thing is, that number was very similar to what it changed to insured with my gt as well. so there isint too extreme of a difference from the gt to the cobra on the site.

im going to call our insurance agency and see in the next day or so. scheduled to test drive a cobra in the next day or two at ford once it clears inspection.

ill have to go from there. there is a blonde around here who drives a sonic blue cobra, saw her today for the first time in months. i wanted to jump on her, then the car. or is it supposed to be the other way around? :)

I went from a 2004 GT coupe to a 2004 SVT Cobra....wish i would have never bought the GT. I put every bolt on imaginable on it. Thankfully, my buddy and i took practically all the bolt on stuff off and put the OE back on, i sold the bolt ons on Ebay and locally, whatever fit the Cobra, i put on it.

When I went from my 97GT to a 99 Cobra my insurance went down $10 a month through AllState. Go figure.

Now I have Hagarty Classic Car insurance and only pay $700 a year...that's with $30K underwritten in case it's totaled. Limited to 3,000 miles a year and can't drive it to work but I wasn't doing that anyways.

with my 97 cobra, my insurance is in my own name and im 19 with one ticket, my insurance is $320 a month, yes i said a month, its crazy but the other cheapest insurance i found was $380 thro all state, $445 thro geiko, and like $400 thro amica. ive checked every where and i cant get it cheaper.....alwell

I went from a 01 GT to an 01 Cobra. I am 37 years old the insurace was about the same for me. I am from Cincinnati and I think age and state will make a big difference. My Cobra had only 25k miles and no mods and was super clean. I think most people take great care of the Cobra, even if it was at the track as long as the tranny and IRS are not broke you should be safe.

How old are you STANGM89? I pay less than $600 a year for full coverage on my '03 and I can put 7k on it and drive it to work. This is through State Farm here in Alabama.

i pay about 150 every 6 months. though the insurance company thinks its a 4 cylinder from the vin when it actually has a 32V cobra motor. best swap for car insurance except if you have any accidents, picking up parts to fix it might cost you.
