do stock 5.0's have forged pistons or not?

If it's a stock 91 5.0HO, from that production era, then it's forged. If it's been rebuilt, or it's a crate motor from some random company, it may not be.

I bet the reason Ford switched to Hypereutectic while still producing the fox chassis was because they once they realized Hyper's were cheaper, but still worked, and since they planned on using them for the upcoming SN-95's, they used up whatever forged were left, then started with the hypers, to save themselves money.

Or it could have been that TRW told them "If you buy a million pistons we'll make you a great deal". When those million ran out Ford bought from the next great deal maker.
 
Yes the pistons were forged, but I would put too much weight on that. It doesn't mean the motor is necessarily better. A tired 5.0 is probaly going to have piston blow-by and other issues regardless. Some say the forged piston 5.0s are better for a supercharger. There may be a small amount of truth in that, but it won't prevent your block from splitting or a rod from getting thrown. For a stock or mildly modded combo, either pistons will be fine.

Either way, you will have a great motor providing it's in good condition.
 
So no relief no forged pistons? I have three 5.0's one is a 91 i stuck a bore came in it and it has reliefs but the other one is a yyy block and there is no valve reliefs? And the other one is a truck motor still going. just wont die. I was taught if it aint broke dont fix it. And everytime i do i regret it. So im still waiting. 91 ho is prabably going in it but if it keeps going i will build a 306 out of the yyy block. Also does the triple y's make that a ho? And where are the numbers to really find out what it is?

Here's an 87-92 TRW forged piston I happen to keep as a paperweight on my desk

Drivers side under the header near the rear where the bolting face is will have a block part number cast into it.

On the intake valley wall at the rear is a flat surface that will have a partial vin stamped into it.
 
Any numbers or letters on those heads?

Check the other side of the block as well. From the style pistons, that looks like a crown Vic/town car 302 motor. The heads likely have e6se cast on the underside near the pushrod guides

E7tE block which was used in a lot of 87-90 Fords. In 1991 there was a slight change so the block plate number was F1xx

If it's a mustang engine it would have 4 piston reliefs and E7tE heads. The circular pistons are from a non-HO engine, and should have e6 heads
