My Engine Noise Clip (Cont..)

sure sounds like wrist pin,or possibly broken piston skirt

it only does it in first or second gear.. So I doubt it's a engine problem. As I said in his other topic I think this is a transmission problem.

Please don't get offended but think about it for a second, HOW would the noise go away in other gears and I believe he said it does not do it with the clutch engaged.. If it was a engine problem it would make that noise in all gears no matter what the clutch position was.

it does it at the top of 1rst and second and when in nuetral, where there is less load on engine, been there done that--it has nothing to do with transmission, when the problem is found, you will see

if you watch the video he is running the throttle by hand---how's the the clutch disengaged:shrug:

He has had a few topics on this and I may be wrong but I believe he said he pushed the clutch in and reved it up and did not hear the noise..

I am also interested to see if the noise is there at WOT in first and second

I did not listen to the clips untill just now, I am having sound card problems on my PC so I had to find some headphones so I can listen to it.

if it was the transmission(I am assuming it is a 5 speed),say a chipped or broken tooth or a bad bearing the sound would be there at all rpm ranges.in order for it to be present in 2 gear ranges means it would have to be in the input gear and the matching gear on the cluster---it would make the noise in 1,2,3 ,5 gear at all rpm's( if it was bearing it would be present at all times)

Yes a bad bearing would be there all the time. But a chipped tooth can make noise like that in certain gears depending on how it's chipped. We had a guy in my shop doing clutch swap and he had a noise just like that happen to him because he dropped something into the trans while it was out.. It made a awful knocking noise when you reved the engine and in the first few gears. It did the exact same thing. LOL when it first came in ( the truck was fine for about a week) we all thought it was the engine making the noise until we put it on the lift and listened.

BUT, after listening to that clip ( The one with him driving) and I just went though all his posts on this and it might just be a bad wrist pin.

One thing I missed in one of his topics is how the noise changed with different engine oil. That would not happen with a trans concern.

What I think he should do next is have the guy at the ford dealer listen to this up on the lift so he can hear exactly where it's coming from. Also it might not be a bad idea to hang the chassis ears on it and have a listen at light load and heavy load.. hang the sensors on the trans and different spots on the motor.

This is why noises are so hard to daig on the internet.

also,I just tore down a 2000(windsor) 4.6 2v,that I bought to build up that only had a knock above 3000 rpm(slight).I always thought that if you spun a rod bearing it would not last long.all the motors I have torn down with a spun bearing(alot) the top and bottom shell occupied the same spot and destroyed the rod and crank. this engine spun # 7&8 but the shells were still butted together so it lasted quite awhile.it was running still when I bought it,could not hear it At idle.strangest thing I have seen.probaly not related, but strange none the less

thats ODD.. what did the crank look like was it all scored?

Thx for the replies. Yes it does make the noise when the clutch is in. But I cant hear it in 3rd or 4th? Like i said my mechanic took the Car to his Ford Tech friend at A FORD DEALERSHIP and they told him something to the matter that the connecting rod was jacked up and causing the piston to bang off the cylinder head. And that only fix was a new engine and It could run fine for years or weeks. I dont know what all they went through to find this problem but they definately didnt tear the engine apart. The noise is back to its original loudness. Drove the car quite a bit today. Still drives good. I swear this car has like every issue ive read about. After starting and running into the gas station and coming out and trying to start the car up again it like almost stalls. It makes that rattle after u start it cold in the morning. It has a knock in the engine... Ughhh. But the body is flawless and in GREAT condition for a 99 so a used low mileage engine will be on its way. Stealth saving right now. Hoping to make it through this summer tho and stick the engine in next summer.

As far as having a bad wrist pin what are the negatives of driving it. I have had the car 3 weeks and drove it about everday with no change in sound or driveability.

he said he drove it for a while,he bought a replacement off craigslist to put in it. it was getting oil,it took off the top two layers(?) of the bearing, there was no brass color, but definitly flaked.the tabs on the shells were non existent, and the back of the shell and rod showed signs of spinning

as far as the connecting rod statement, bull,it aint't gonna last for years.see my previous posts, this is the ONLY engine I seen last longer than a week with a spun bearing.I have been a mechanic for the last thirty years and have built many a high performance motor,it can happen but not likely.if the skirt is broken or ringland is collapsed(detonation?) even a bad wrist pin,it may last awhile, but how long? it is anyones guess

Dude I wouldn't even worry about it. Run some straight 30 weight oil in that b1tch and if the noise quiets down, more power to you. Just drive it till she blows. In the meantime, save up for a forged motor. That engine could last a few more hours, or a few more years. But no one can give you a time estimate. That sound doesn't sound TOO terrible like a rod knock, so I think your fine. Just hope for the best.
