how to contain rust

My DD has a few spots on the left rear fenderwell and I really don't want it to keep on spreading. I can take some photos and show you the issue thus far, if that would assist.

The paint is starting to bubble up on the top of the fender and there are some surface rust spots around the rim of the well, towards the front of the car.

I figured I'd start with you guys in the Classic section first and proceed along if it's not the place to pester.

bad thing is, when you say fenderwell, i'm 99% sure is is where the quarter, and the wheelhouse meet. there is almost no way to get to the back side of the quarter, and get rid of the rust. people will tell you rust encapsulator, or things of that nature, and while it will slow the process down, it will not stop it. IF you can get down behind the problem area (thru the trunk, back seat, etc...) and remove the loose scale, you can paint it with por 15, rust encapsulator,etc, let if cure properly, and pack it full of duraglass, to keep the moisture from laying against the metal and probibly have a fighting chance.

sand it all off and use eastwoods rust encapsulator over the bare metal. I had some trunk rust, which I removed and applyed the rust encapsulator. That was a year ago, and I had to remove it because I was ready to strip all that crappy trunk spatter off and when I removed the rust encapsulator there was no rust!

That is what I would do, i think eastwoods product can be applied directly over rust, but I think POR-15 needs a really clean and rust free surface to work properly

POR is suppose to mean Paint Over Rust.

Yeah with POR 15 you can paint over surface rust once you remove the loose scale, dirt and oil. I fact I think if you have it down to smooth bear metal they recommend you treat the metal first with their metal ready, so the POR will stick.

yes, but if you just get rid of the rust it wont eat through the other side since your only treating one side.

thats my point... if you cant get to the back side of it, to seal the source of the problem, it WILL come back. ive fixed too many caviliers, corsicas, and civics with the same problem described here... water gets into the seam between the quarter, and wheel house,and even with the modern ecoat primers,the rust eventually takes hold.

Seems like this is the biggest issue faced. It's a '98 Civic and the issue is on the left rear quarter. I hope to be able to get some help on this one, but wanted to know how to get all the things I need as far as supplies go, in order to treat this best.






Also, I think I owe you guys some photos, if you think it will assist. I'm bad about taking pictures, so I hope to get them soon.

Here is how I did the window channel of my 73 Mach: 73channelrepair. The key is the POR-15 Metal Ready product (hydrochloric acid)which eats through the rust and leaves a protective zinc oxide coating. I used the same process on my rear fender well lips and trunk, which have held up without any signs of rust through for 4 years now.
