Netflix I have the option of hd dvd's instead of stand definition dvd's. I have a toshiba dvd player thats compatible to 720p or 1080p. I'm using hdmi cables and I have a hd tv.

So am I good to go with the HD dvd's or do I have to have a special dvd player or something?

Thanks
Josh

Josh....I'm guessing that you have whats called an "up convert" DVD player. Unfortunately, unless your player is no more than 1 year or so old and cost you $400+ then it is not HD-DVD compatible. You have to have a whole new player to read the discs. I know the Toshiba HD-DVD player was just reduced to $300 but it was selling for $500 or so before then.

Gotcha....that stinks. Just enjoy it though! I'm waiting to see who wins the HD-Blu Ray DVD battle before I buy a new player

From the looks of it, it'll be BR and not HD.

1. Disney (a major studio) is not making any movies on HD. To me, that's a "major" blow to HD.
2. BR currently outsells HD by about 3-1.
3. Sony (obviously) backs BR. Keep in mind it's not the "old" Sony during the Beta versus VHS days, but the global conglomerate Sony of the current day.

The way I looked at it, I bought a PS3 (one of the most problem free BR players out now, and the only one that gets software updates via internet) for the BR player and got a "free" game console to boot :)

But Sony also stated they will not put any **** on Blu-Ray!
**** is a huge drive for the industry HD-DVD already has some Adult film contracts.

Yes it is the Old Sony considering Blu-Ray technology is almost 10 years old now

Your Ps3 is not the only Blu-Ray player that gets firmware updates.

HD-DVD is outselling Blueray by an average of 3-1 in the US and europe, NOT the other way round, do a quick google search and you will see the results!

Sony may have the better product, but they are losing this one AGAIN!

also warner brothers (major studio) are only doing HD-DVD!

sonys PS3 is gonna lose very badly, the wii and 360 are both outselling the PS3 and if bluray loses the war, nobody will buy the PS3 for its dvd abilitys BUT will by the xbox for its HD-DVD abilitys!

the cars are stacked against sony for this to all go wrong!

This is an interesting site, but I don't know how reputable it is:

Doesn't show HDDVD winning

The fact that they allowed the industry to come out with two different HD disc formats is utter BS. Everyone has to sit there now and wait to see which one to go with or shell out $1,000 to get the dual player from LG I believe that plays both.

And I guess we will all go out now and purchase our fave movies on BR or HDDVD even though we already own the movie on DVD (The first time it came out, then bought again when they came out with the Uber Ultimate Edition), so now we probably have 4 different versions of the same movie.

Were a bunch of suckers!!

And yes, I too am looking into getting a High Def player.:p

Another, with Nielson ratings:

yea Nielson has BR on top. on eproductwars, BR is only down by a few...pretty close.
we got the ps3, so we've bought a few BR. Only like 3. We had to get Planet Earth in it...no questions (on amazon.com for cheap) which looks freakin amazing. We still will buy normal dvd's for the most part though.

I have the HD-DVD add on for Xbox and love it. I like how Microsoft gave you the option to have the player if you wanted it or not. Whereas Sony makes you pay for it whether you will use it or not. The both have their ups and downs. Disney, I could care less about really. Universal is the major backer for HD-DVD. They are the biggest movie company and make some good movies. HD-DVD has sold more stand alone players then Blu-ray. Sure PS3 has sold a lot of units, but how many people are using the blu-ray player or even have a HDTV? Also, the last sales figures I saw, Blu-Ray was only leading HD-DVD in movie sales by a few thousand.

My 5th Element (RM) and 300 just came in. Amazing. Simply Amazing.
