Ladies and Gents -

I just returned from a week in the field in MI. I'm putting up 160MW of wind power out there. Damn, is there nothing to do. Cell phones don't even work. Where I am, everyone has "Thumb Cellular" which is some shady mom and pop operation. Furthermore, all of the computers that I had access too were so congested with security BS that I couldn't even view a forum, never mind post.

I also had a couple meetings in Detroit and Novi, and both of those towns suck as well. I felt like I was going to get mugged everywhere in Detroit. I had put in for a Toyota Camry for a rental car, but they didn't have any so they gave me a cherry red 2007 mustang 6 banger instead. I thought this was an awesome stroke of good luck until I realized what a head turner these cars are. And this is a town where you don't want the attention.

Needless to say, its good to be home.

Corn fields suck. My meetings were literally right off of Eight Mile Road.

I live in Michigan my cell phone works, my computer works and there is just as much to do in Michigan if not more than in any other state Ive been too...i mean i guess that's if u like the outdoors and cars,, i mean come on this past weekend was the woodward dream cruise people travel across country to come see it...and ass far as Detroit goes i live 20 minutes from down town....or since u know the mile roads 8 mile...haha.....i live off the 14th mile, in the suburbs..FRASER, but its like 10 minute form 8 mile and i can tell u this if u think 8 mile is scary that's a joke Ive been there a millon times, along with downtown Detroit, believe ME them are the 2 safest places in Detroit..its the inn city of Detroit that u should be worried about..well hope ur next trip is better man....

Man you where in Michigan the week of the dream cruise and you didnt even go???? the dream cruise is AWESOME..... cars from every year just pack a 4 lane road for about 12 miles... you cant move... I went on Thursday before it even started and saw a saleen S7 and this beauty..pics and vid below!!! GT500!!!
not to mention every ferrari and lambo imaginable

And Novi is sweet unless you are a dork and dont like to go out to bars and clubs and dont drink!!! but then i guess everything would be boring then... even if you are the movie person, they have a movie theatre you can drink in for gods sake. i have been to alot of states and towns and very few compare to Novi as far as things to do, and the amount of hott chicks. but then again if you dont ever leave your hotel I guess it would be boring!.....now detroit on the other hand is really not a great downtown area (compared to most) unless you catch a ballgame and then hit the bars around there...

Another michigan guy here and i dont know what cell phone setup you're referring to lol. I've NEVER heard of that.

And novi has PLENTY to do to keep you busy for a weekend, its actually a pretty nice setup.

Not to mention the dream cruise....

And you're safe in downtown detroit, other parts, eh, you're on your own. But we all know Detroit is one of the worse cities but i will give credit where credit is due, each time i go downtown i see a new project or something else going on. They are definately trying to get it together just like other cities who have come up from the bottom.

Im not a big fan of michigan but damn dude, it doesnt suck like you put it. Maybe you just didnt know where to go or what. I dont know of any corn fields close to "cities", now travel a bit down 8 mile out west and you might find some, but then again, thats a totally different 8 mile than the one in detroit. In detroit on 8 mile you'd see strip club after strip club....0 corn fields.

Anywho, whats there to do in Hudson, MA thats so great?

Everytime I've been to Detroit…I never feel that "unsafe" and always have a blast. Catch a tigers game…followed by bar hopping. Jump on the people mover and head over to Greek town for some late night breakfast. Hell, you can even head over to the Casino to do some gambling if your heart desires. No, Detroit is not in the best condition, but it's not as bad as it's made out to be. Add to the fact that it has some of the wealthiest burbs in the country…and also has some great bars and it's actually a good time.

Considering you missed one of the biggest cruises in the country…I'd say it's pretty safe to say you simply didn’t research "things to do" in the area. Any new place is going to be boring as hell if your driving aimlessly trying to find something that "looks fun".

Oakland county is at the top of the list in the country for richest countys im pretty sure.

Actually I live in Natick, MA these days which is 20 minutes from Boston. Detroit does not stack up well against Boston.

I stayed in a town called "Bad Axe" Michigan. I had a couple meetings in Novi and Detroit, but the project site was in Bad Axe, MI and Ubly, MI. The principle means of income where I stayed was corn, sugar beats, hay, and beans. There is no industry whatsoever there and the locals are decidedly unfriendly. When they found out I was designing 100 or so 500 foot tall windmills in the fields they were even less happy. Contrast that to Western New York, which is also farm land, where the people are friendly to the point of annoying and strolling around is encouraged.

I don't know how many of you travel for business, but its not a vacation. That crap about going out to fancy dinners all the time, taking in the sights, is not reality. The reality of it is flight delays, cheap hotels, expense limits, and cars rented where mileage is accounted for.

For the night I was in Detroit, we were told by the hotel not to walk around at night unless you had a guide or knew the area.

Cities that I've been to that I thought were fantastic: Miami, San Diego, Boston, Austin, San Francisco, Montreal, East Aurora New York, Raleigh

Cities that I did not like: Detroit, New York City, anywhere in Louisiana

Dosen't stack up how? I'm not arguing which one is better, but because you stayed in a Hotel room for 1 night in Detroit makes you an expert?

FYI, Ubly is nowhere near Detroit (100+ miles) as is Bad Axe.

Also, as with any small town/village (Ubly has a population of < 1k and Bad Axe <4k) there is not going to be much to do…period.

Business trips = teh suk. Especially when you are on your own like I always am. And you are at the mercy of printing presses. On call for 36 hours straight (which I've worked 32 hours straight once) always on press checks at 3am. Yeah, not exactly what I call fun.

But I also wouldn't use a business trip as a "good" way to measure the value of a city.

Well i cant account for random small towns throughout Michigan and lets just be honest...you will encounter that in every state across the country. Im sure there are towns like that where the people will be the nicest you'll ever meet...and u'll have people like u experienced.

I took this girl out(present day girlfriend) in the beginning of the summer to a few spots in downtown detroit. She LOVED it and never saw either spot before. We went to the Fox theater and to get something to eat at Andiamos on the river. I guarantee anyone would have enjoyed that night.

And also, there were festivals going on downtown all weekend, shoot for the past week they've been there. Down on hart plaza...i didnt go but again...stuff to do.

And just like Cleveland, which once was a "bad city" like Detroit that has grown to be a very beauitful and up beat city, Detroit will find its way. It has the resources to be a beautiful and thriving city. Just drive around...there is TONS of potential. But we gotta get the right people in office who are going to make it happen. And more over, we have to have the patience to wait for it to evolve.

Yes, I am. I started out at a small municipal being a jack of all trades. Got a new job about 6 months ago (why I moved) designing and overseeing the construction of wind generators. It is interesting for sure, but as the youngest engineer in the company I catch all the travel assignments. My job is about 65 percent travel. This is a lot of fun sometimes, but when you're gone for three weeks and find out that you missed the appeal time for the BS 200 dollar handicapped parking violation, it gets annoying...

This thread isn't all about Detroit. I drove all over Michigan. Saw a lot of depressed industry and got a "run down" vibe from it. And don't even get me started on Northwest Airlines. The client that hired us was talking about how all the young professionals leave the state because there is no work there.

I'd take Boston over Chicago. Even the pizza.
