STORE BRAND OIL/FILTER MYTHS...STILL GOOD OIL?

I just did a oil change in mine and used the Valvoline synthetic blend because the bottle color matches my car. But its a good name brand, synthetic and with a Motorcraft filter it only cost me $14 for the whole job. Besides Valvoline uses a red Cobra in their commercial so I had to use it :)

I'm not a synthetic fan. I know it's good stuff but not convinced it's that much better than conventionals. I only run conventional in my car...no desire to go synthetic. Last time i had the heads off my 5.0...there was still crosshatching.

Same here. I've never ran it due to the cost. They say you can go 5k miles before an oil change on different oils that have synthetic or more. Anyone ever heard that?

I've always wondered how these synthetic oils can claim their absurd 15k oil change intervals. I mean, even if you change the filter out, and even if the oil, itself, isn't breaking down into a black sludge, by the time you reach 15k, you've still got 15k's worth of dirty crap and whatnots floating around in your engine that your filter can't remove. I only use synthetic in The HARBL, because it only takes three quarts for an oil change and comes out to about the same cost as 5 quarts of the regular stuff that I buy. :D

That's exactly the reason I don't run synthetic. Their main selling point is that you can go longer between changes. But my response is why would you want to go longer? That just means small metal particles and other contaminants stay in the oil and wash around the engine longer.

The whole 3000 miles oil change is a myth. Conventionals can go longer that that. If you send an oil sample in to blackstone labs, they can analyze how the oil breaks down in your engine over time and give you a recommended oil change interval based on factors like heat and contaminants being introduced into the oil.

But i just stick to conventionals and do a change at 3K miles or 2 months (i drive a lot of highway) just so i know i'm regularly flushing the engine out....has nothing to do with oil quality.

Redline claims you can use their synthetic for up to 12,000 miles as long as you change the filter every 3,000.

This is if my memory serves me right.

This sounds retarded. How can you possibly change the filter of without losing a ton oil? and if why you can, why not dump the rest while you're down there?

15k? That's insane. I would never wait that long. Heck I get disstressed when I'm 100 miles over, let a alone 15k.

I personally have always used the Advance Auto Oil and Advance Grip filter. Never had an issue and I run my cars hard. I always change every 3k miles, anyone who doesn't is a freaking retard.

The 3K/3 month OCI is not always needed. I think someone earlier mentioned getting a UOA so they know how long the oil is good for. This is the only way to know.

Many UOA's have shown that even a cheap dino oil was still fine after 5K miles.

How so? Most manufacturers seem to be recommending intervals of 5k miles or more. Hell, my daily commuter doesn't even have a recommended interval amount...just the computer which tells's you your oil contamination percent along with the recomended oil change. After 5k miles I tend to freak out a bit and change the oil regardless of what the puter says.

The only ones that seem to be recommending 3k mile intervals are the oil change shops...and for obvious reasons.

The 3K recommended oil change is pushed by people who make money off selling people oil and giving oil changes.

Have an oil analysis done and you'll find even conventional oils don't begin to break down until 5000-6000 miles.

I never let mine go that far, but my point is you don't need to panic if you are driving around on 3005 miles without a change.

i work for OReilly Auto Parts and our house brand oil is made by Exxon(think Superflo)...our housebrand filters are made by Purolator....i can get 5 qts of our oil and our filter for about $5 so unless the price of oil comes way down soon im sticking with it...hasnt let me down yet

I keep hearing, “don’t buy the store brand, it’s recycled, or its junk oil”. In fact, let’s think a bit more about this. The people that say this crap need to think before they speak! I’ve heard so many people say that the store brand is just bad oil. First off, stores like AutoZone, Advance Auto, etc. DO NOT MAKE OIL. They are getting the oil from other oil companies like Pennzoil, so you’re actually still getting good name brand oil with a different logo. Just like cereal, you have captain crunch and crisp crunch. If I took the crisp crunch and switched it with the captain crunch, would anyone ever know?

Let’s hear you insight on this matter….
