Anyone drive their stang w/ snow tires??

I have a 4x4 i can use in deep snow, but the fact is the Gt gets much better highway gas milage during my 50 mile commute.

I'm worried about getting caught in those small 1-2" storms. I have summer performance tires on my car and any slick surfact makes me nervous now.

I've heard guys say snow tires makes a huge difference.

Buying a set of 17" blizzaks for $200 to toss on a spare set of wheels. I'll also toss some bags of sand in the trunk as well, but do you think it will help out on those light storms where you can still see black pavement but the surface has a light coating?

I know some people will never let their Stang out in weather like that, but I drove mine as my DD through four winters here in Colorado and never got stuck. That situation you describe, it will be fine with the Blizzaks on it. Just take it easy and you shouldn't have any issues! :nice:
 
I'm not planning on driving around in blizzards. I just want to be able to go out with the Mustang and not worry about light flurries or some ice in parking lots.

I remember last year when i had the stock goodyears i got stuck in a parking lot in a couple frozen ruts about 1" high. I managed to rock myself out, but i just want to be able to navigate snow-covered side roads in the 1-2 days following a storm when things haven not melted away yet.

Deep stuff i'll def take a 4X4.

I'm not afaid to drive the car in the snow. They way i clean the car, you would never know it come spring time. My daily driver is usually cleaner than my friends weekend drivers.
 
I have Dunlop winter sports. I actually never took them off my car after last winter, I ran them all summer and now I'm running them again this winter. I went thru this past Ice storm with no problems and the last 2 winters with no problems. I have driven in snow up to 7 inch + on the ground (now that my car is lowered I can't do that).

blizzak ws50 here. just put them on yesterday. this will be the 3rd winter as a DD in the snow and the 2nd winter boosted. :nice:

no problems with the blizzaks. *knock on wood*
 
+1 for blizzak or any snow tire. I've got dunlops now just because I bought them from a guy who used them for a season then sold his GT. I don't even have any weight in the trunk and have no problem getting around, the tires just dig in after a few revolutions and bite really well. Just snowed 5" in Chicago here last night and I made it around without a problem. Braking is also incredible with all 4 on, much better then any car with all seasons.
 
295s are waaaayyyyyy too wide for a winter tire. You need a narrow tire to cut through the snow. Also, why would you mount snow tires on your nice rims? If there is any salt used in your area, this will wreck the finish on your rims.

You should have bought snow tires to fit V6 stang rims. Probably would have been cheaper to do that (including the price of V6 rims) versus just buying huge winter tires. You would save your money, save your nice rims, and get better winter traction.

You will be good man. I drove for 3 winters....1 of them with the vortech on. In the ohiovalley haha. With snow tires you will be good, but always take it easy and leave room to stop. FYI I had GSD3's on rofl.
 
I have 245/45/17 Dunlop Wintersport M3's on my 02.

AMAZING TIRES. My car handles better in the snow/ice/slush/wet then my brothers 06 Honda Civic with all season tires.

You could drive a corvette in the snow with these tires if you had to, Well worth the $$.
 
Already got two bags of rock salt in the rear.


Got the Blizzaks tonight. Plenty of meat on them so i think it was a good deal for $200


I have two spare bullitt wheels so i'll mount two and put them on the rear and see if I can track down another two used bullitt wheels for the front. If not, i'll use two of my '97 Cobra wheels up front.


I want to try to not use my Cobra wheels because they already have good tires on it and i dont want to be changing tires around all the time. I'd rather try to find two used 17x8's for the front..even if they don;t match
 
thats about how much snow we have right now too...

I forgot to mention for Orange I have some 215/60R16 Studded Goodyear Nordic's

and I also just bought a set of 255/40R17 Blizzaks for the Cobra (when it gets here... should be Sunday (there was a delay at the border and the trucker had to wait with 10 cars... sucks but it wasn't only mine waiting...
 
Actually 295's are not too wide of a snow tire they did great in the snow I ran them through all last weekend. 295's are not any wider than the big 'ol 35 X 12.50 snow tires they put on trucks and they have less weight in the back of them. And the rims are actually damaged, Thanks to the tire shop, so no sweat there. I can't run V6 wheels on my car due to the 13" brakes up front.
 
no disrespect intended, but if you get deep snow like we get here, you want a smaller (less wide) tire. I'm not sure what you get there but if it was deep the tires would be constantly trying to push the snow forward, rather then go through it. It has been proven that narrow tires will cut through snow ALOT better then a wide one... yes you do get more contact surface, but it doesn't help when you are floating on top of the snow or trying to push it...

Just think when you see a truck or 4x4 with a plow on the front, they use skinny tall tires to get the best traction...

I have also only seen the chrome plated rims cause real problems in winter, factory ones are the worst!! The ones you have are not bad at all, the coating will eventually come off around the bead seating area, which is all depending on the prep and quality etc. but thats why they make bead-sealer...
 
If snow gets that deep I am not driving anywhere.
My car is lowered hence my bumper will start pushing snow before my tires do. Which is why my wide expensive tires are perfect for the snow. Skinny/smaller tires will make no difference if you are snow plowing with your front bumper you will get stuck no matter what size tire you have.
I personally don't buy expensive wheels anyway if they look like the expensive ones why pay the high price. This set I have on now cost me less than $400 bucks so I just keep the nice ones on.
